Shore Fishing the Reservoirs...
A couple of people have asked in the new forum about shore fishing at the reservoirs. Shore fishing is fun and fish can be caught, you just have to be patient. The first thing to do is make sure you have a fishing license (if you're over 15) and a DEP access permit...

7/28/06 Opperman's Pond
Stopped by Opperman's Pond in Pleasantville with the kids to fish for a little bit. It's great to have ponds nearby that will always hold some sort of fish the kids can catch.
Sam's friend Marc started catching sunnies right away on his plastic worms. Aimee and I were skunked as I threw out my rubber frogs and she practiced casting her Sponge Bob rod & reel.
We also met a nice young lady, Amanda, and her mom who also stopped by to fish the pond. They enjoy fishing as a family and were all set with their real bait, worms. Amanda was the champ for the night catching 2 nice largemouth bass, one being about 13"-14" long.
We left as it started getting dark and the bats were buzzing our heads,. We all agreed, they won't hurt anyone but they are creepy. Surprised

7/24/06 on Kensico Reservoir
Went out on Kensico Reservoir with one of my fishing buddies, Arthur. We share a few boats on the reservoirs and enjoy getting the chance to go out together when we can.
Arthur volunteered to do the rowing and we set out at 5am by the Rye Bridge. We were hoping for a topwater bite near some weed flats but only caught 1 largemouth bass at that spot. Then we rowed all around the Rye Lake side of the lake trying any and all spots.
Ultimately we caught about 7 fish including a nice size yellow perch, a pickeral, and a bunch of decent largemouth bass. All in all, a nice day out with good company.

7/16/06 Croton Reservoir
Had a nice trip out on Croton Reservoir with my new buddy Dominic. We were out for about 10 hours and only caught 2 fish but it was fun. We were reminded of the saying "Any day fishing is better then a day at work" or something like that.
Here's a shot of the best of the 2 fish, a nice 3 pound largemouth bass caught on a white spinnerbait right under the Taconic Parkway South bridge.

7/12/06 Tornado hits Kensico Reservoir
The tornado that ripped through Mt. Pleasant made its way through Areas 3 & 4 at Kensico Reservoir. There didn't seem to be too much damage to boats although many were overturned and flipped around. The main problem was all the trees that broke or fell onto the road and on top of some boats denting them.
The DEP and local authorities have closed the areas until furthur notice. I went to checkout my boat but saw police tape across the pathway. Luckily I could see from there that it was okay.

7/10/06 Kensico Reservoir

Sam and I went out on our favorite reservoir this morning between 6 and 10am.

3lb smallie

Today was my turn to catch a nice smallmouth bass. I caught this 3lber on a yellow/crawfish colored DT-16 Rapala crankbait in about 25 ft of water.  The DT-16 sinks to about 16 feet and that's where we saw fish hanging out on our depthfinder.

We'll be hitting Muscoot Reservoir later this week. I also am attending a Get-Together on Croton Reservoir next Sunday with the guys from NYBass.com . Hopefully I'll have some decent reports.

Family & Friends

 steve

Nothing like going out with your buddy and his son for a little fishing trip. It looks like Adam is doing all the fishing and his dad, Bill, is relaxing in the back of the boat. Steve, the captain, is ready to row to the next spot.

I heard later that Adam did catch the only fish of the day and they got dad to row back to the mooring area. Hey, it's not always about catching the big one or how many you catch, it's about being with friends and enjoying yourself.

FujiFilm Photo Contest

FujiFilm Photo Contest

FujiFilm has an annual photo contest to promote "Catch, Photograph, and Release" a method we promote as well. The rules are simple and posted at their website . Basically they are looking for fun photos of children holding the fish they catch. They have two age categories, ages 5-10 and ages 11-16. The older kids are asked to write a short paragraph about their experiences or opinions on catch, photograph & release.

Prizes range from FujiFilm giftbags to thousand dollar U.S. Savings Bonds. Have some fun, showoff the kids,  and "Catch, Photograph, and Release".
