Off-Season Equipment Check...

Well it's not the off-season for everyone. Some people may be ice fishing and some people can fish for other species then bass. For those, like me, who like to bass fish, this is the time to evaluate, clean, and inventory your equipment.

I've been working on my  "Plan of Attack" for April 1st when I can get back on the New York City reservoir system. I was reminded by Jerry McKinnis a veteran angler who has a show on ESPN on Saturday mornings to keep it simple. With that in mind I'm redoing my tackle bag and all the individual boxes of artificial baits.

Visited the 2007 New York Boat Show

Got a chance to go down and visit some of my fishing buddies at the New York Boat Show recently. Now most people think of the boat show, like I did years ago, as a mass of million dollar yachts but there's always a group of freshwater exhibits to be found.
My friend Mike D had his "Lunkerville" booth all setup, showing episodes from his weekly fishing show. Right next to him Jason Cuda, of Hookerz Tackle, was setup with all his high quality hooks and baits. Bass Pro Jason Reynolds and his buddy Mike had the "Fish & Fetch" tank nearby and held seminars hourly for show visitors.

Still Catch & Release Season...

This year the DEP has changed the bass fishing season to year-round as long as you practice Catch & Release. It used to be that the bass season ended on Dec. 1st completely but not anymore. Boating on the NYC reservoirs has ended until the spring.

11/10/06 Muscoot Reservoir
Had a nice "Indian Summer" day out on Muscoot Reservoir on Veteran's Day.
My friend, Arthur, and I went out on Muscoot Reservoir hoping to catch "The Big One" as usual but didn't find him or her. (TBG would be a 5 pounder or more to us) We did have a great time trying and each caught a few fish while we were looking for a lunker. We started around 6:00am and finished around 1:30pm.
My best fish was the largemouth bass in the photo. It hit my spinnerbait in about 6 feet of water around a weed bed. Arthur weighed it on his scale as just over 3 pounds.
Arthur's best fish was a nice 2+ pound smallmouth bass that gave him a good fight after attacking his minnow colored jerkbait. We were about to take a photo and it decided to jump ship, I guess it doesn't like it's picture taken.
It was the first time I ever caught the big fish of the day when going out with Arthur. I didn't rub it in since he's caught many bigger fish every other time we've gone out.

About Trout...
Don't forget about the trout in many of our reservoirs and streams. I plan on learning as much as I can about how to target them. If anyone has some tips or reference materials, please post in our new forum "About Trout".
