Stopped by The Rockland Sports Show... |
|
I went to the Rockland Sports Show for the first time and had a great time looking around and of course, buying gear. My main objective was a nice spinning rod and I got a nice Quantum PT 7' MH from the gang at Northern Bass. They're a company from New Hampshire that my buddy Arthur deals with a lot. They are very helpful, friendly and, most of all, have excellent prices. The fun of these shows is also seeing some products up close. Online catalogs can show you dozens of pictures of swimbaits or soft plastic but when the exhibitor has a small tank setup and you see that bait wiggle and move, it's a sale. I dug in on a bunch of Fishbelly Hawgshad soft plastics at their booth that I'll use to dropshot this season. My other "find" was seeing that Keitech USA had a booth. Keitech makes some of the finest jigs and jigheads in Japan. They are now making a bigger move into the U.S. with their products. I had seen the videos of their jigs being used with their soft plastic "Little Spider" and knew months ago that I'd be buying some. They're a little pricey but all the components are top notch. Luckily they had some deals and the price was in my range. I loaded up on some tungsten jig heads and little spider plastics to finesse fish for bass this season. All in all a great show to walk around and experience a variety of gear and tackle before the season starts. Now I'm anxious to use it all. |

An Extended Boating Season??? |
|
I just drove by Croton Reservoir and it reminded me that some people are trying to extend the boating season on, at least, the southern NY reservoirs. There was no ice on Croton and there's no ice on Kensico Reservoir either. They allow shore fishing between December 1st and March 31st so many of us wonder why we can't take out our boats if the lake is not frozen during that time. True, you'd have to be a hearty soul who bundles up but there's still trout to be had in these waters. Even bass are catch & release during these months. It will also help to have more licensed anglers out there helping report any illegal activities going on to the DEP Police. Always keep the DEP Police number (888-426-7433) handy year round anyway if you see poachers or swimmers, etc. If you'd like to present your opinions on extending the boating season, feel free to email the Commissioner of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, Ms. Emily Lloyd. They offer a webpage to contact her at this LINK |

Please let me know if this design doesn't work for you. Mainly, does it stay together and act relatively normal on your browser? Thanks, Vinny |

Wade's is closed for the season and will open a new shop in early spring. They provide a great service with live bait, custom spinning baits, quality spoons, assorted tackle, and a wealth of knowledge about our local reservoirs. I look forward to their new shop. |

Last Days on the NYC Reservoirs... |
|
The boating season ends on Dec. 1st for the NYC Reservoir system. You can still fish from shore but, no more boats on the water until April 1st 2008. I got my last chances on Croton Reservoir on Friday and Kensico Reservoir on Saturday this holiday weekend. Checkout the forum for a couple of pictures and a report.. |

Have a Safe & Happy Thanksgiving |
We have a great bunch here and in the forums. Relax on Thanksgiving, have a nice meal, enjoy the family, watch some football, watch your husbands fall asleep watching football, let the kids run around a little more than normal, drive carefully to the relatives house, and be thankful for whatever makes you happy. I'm relaxing so I have the energy to fish the rest of our last days this season. Friday on Croton and Saturday on Kensico. The season ends for boats on the reservoirs on Dec 1st. |

Went out for some trout with my buddy Tom and realized, too late, that I need a drift sock. We could plan a trip out on Kensico but we couldn't plan the weather. I guess part of fishing is remembering the old Boy Scout motto "Be prepared". A drift sock helps slow the rowboat down by creating drag behind it. On a windy day it gives you much more time to cast and fish before you're blown off your intended pattern. Here's a quick shot of a drift shot that is linked to BassPro Shops...

Hit Bog Brook for the first time... |
|
Got to go out today on Bog Brook Reservoir, right over the county line in Putnam. Had a great time with my son Sam and his buddy Marc. We caught fish all morning with one of us getting a 3lb 6oz smallmouth bass. Read my post in the forums for more pictures and a report. |

Don't Forget, Renew your NY License for Oct. 1st... |
|
Just a quick reminder that the NYS Resident fishing license expires on Sept. 30th. You can renew online or at your local bait & tackle shop. If you don't have one yet, they are only $19.00 for the full year. Cheaper and more fun then a movie |
