I say this every year, the DEP in Mahopac is the best run government agency I've ever dealt with. The people there are always helpful with answers to all your reservoir boating questions. I just picked up 2 boats that I won in the recent auction, had them steam cleaned, and moved them to the reservoirs. It couldn't have gone smoother. Thanks DEP! |

I've been going to meetings of KEEP, the Kensico Environmental Enhancement Program, recently to help and to learn. One of the projects they support is "Trout in the Classroom", a program where middle school students get to raise trout to be stocked in local waters. The following link is a short movie of brook trout parr that are being cared for at Westlake Middle School and soon will be released in Kensico Reservoir. The brook trout have been seen surviving and growing at Kensico from previous releases. |

Recently, spots to place a boat on some of the NYC Reservoirs have been getting tough to find. Some reservoirs are just more popular than others. The DEP does it's best to keep the numbers fair and manageable, I know a lot of guys, like myself, have found having a "Boat Buddy" works great to get you on a variety of reservoirs. If you're out there fishing with someone for 10 hours, you can generally figure out if that guy is a good match for sharing boats. If you can develop a trust, trading keys and sharing boats can be very advantageous for both of you. As long as you communicate it works great. It also allows you to experience reservoirs you may not have had the chance to. I started on Kensico with 1 small jon boat then by hooking up with another fisherman I now have shared boats on 8 reservoirs. I enjoy being able to visit different ones for different species or fishing conditions. One might be good for smallies and another might be good for trout. Another reservoir may have weeds while another is known for the deep dropoffs and open water. It helps to have a choice depending on your fishing mood. |

Great Site to Learn Fishing Knots |
|
I've been hearing more talk about what knots to use with different line. Here's a great site with a variety of knots suggested and illustrated for anglers. I've already printed out a few that I need to practice before my next trip out. Click here for the site |

4-13 out on Windy Cross River |
|
Dominic and I went out about 7:00am this morning to Cross River Reservoir. We had visions of catching some bass and had only slight success. The big obstacle today was the wind. It was calm enough until about 10am and then there were white caps on the water it was so windy. That made it tough to fish the shoreline, even with a drift sock. Here's Dom's 3lb 8oz largemouth, our only fish of the windy day.
We still had a great time chatting and analyzing the lake for next time. If I thanked Dom for rowing against the wind 20 times, I should have said it more. Great job Dom! |

Well the weatherman (most all the sources) said it was going to be 70% rain with thunderstorms today so I stayed home to do inside work. Gee golly gosh, it's about 70 degrees out with hardly a cloud in the sky. Maybe they should do what I'm going to go back to doing, look out the window. I did get a chance to go over some things and fix some links. Good luck to everyone out there. I'll be out tomorrow going for some bass. Hopefully the water temps keep moving up. |

4/5 Trip Out on Kensico... |
|
Got out for the first time this season and had fun but alas, no fish. Surprisingly there weren't many boats on Kensico this morning but it may have been the weatherman that stopped some anglers. They predicted rain so it was nice and clear. LOL We marked a lot of fish with our depthfinder but they weren't feeding on our lures. The only success we heard from other boats was the guys using shiners getting a few average size lakers.

Looking forward to the season... |

I'm psyched to see all the new posters and posts in the forums. There should be a lot of quality posts as April 1st comes around. I can tell a lot of the new guys are experienced and knowledgeable. Everyone enjoy the new season! |

Added Orvis for the Trout People |
Just thought I'd mention that I've added Orvis to my merchant links. They have a lot of trout tackle as well as great clothes for all anglers. Any merchant on the site that you click on helps keep this site running. Thanks, Vinny |
