So I went to Cape Cod for three days and met up with my family.
Got up at 3am to do some surfcasting and to greet the sun. Fished the
Nauset inlet and hiked about five miles of beach. Not much stirring
except for a few seals giving me the cross-eyed inspection. Had one
striper strike but I was asleep at the wheel.

I booked at Charter out of Truro with Captain Jeff Smith. I Had
chartered with him before about five years ago and really enjoyed the
outing. This time I brought my two nephews along. They were itching to
catch some stripers.....so was I.
here is a link to Jeff's Blog.....some fantastic shots....
Outer Cape ChroniclesAll I have to say is that the fishing was nuts. Barely a cast went
unnoticed. Jeff is a fly and light spinning charter. We fished topwater
baits all day long. It was awesome.

I thought I knew about just about every bait in the northeast....But I
don't. We were soon on fish just off of Provincetown and they were
feasting on huge schools of halfbeaks. I was informed that they are a
relative of the ballyhoo. Waves of these beaks would erupt out of the
water dance across the Provincetown harbor.

We pretty much had this spectacle and the bass to ourselves. There
were a couple of boats but they were fishing bait...some using wire and
for whatever reason we were the only boat hooking up on every cast.
The spooks and poppers we were using would barely touch down before
the water around them would explode with frenzied Striper.

The day started with barely legal bass and progressed into larger and
larger fish. We must have caught about sixty fish between the three of
us. Mike and Marc had the power and I just culled the rats for them. We
were using the some budget lures. Mike was using a Bomber pencil that
had gotten it rear hook sheered off on the second fish. He used that
bomber for the rest of the day....it didn't stop him from catching fish on
every cast. You can see the busted pencil in the below shot.

We decided to try another spot an left the fish biting. There was a
report of some fish on a school of mackerel. We were told that Bass,
Blues, and some bluefin tuna were mixed in.

After motoring for forty minutes....we get to the school. No bluefin but plenty of fish. The blues were hearty.

some cough-up

We culled out some good eating fish and called it a day. This trip was
spectacular. And my nephews had a blast. They were in as much awe
as I was. It was just crazy to see these huge masses roaming around
like hungry wolves.
