Striped Bass July 6 midnight
« on: July 08, 2010, 04:41:07 pm »
Took a friend with me on the Island current IV out of City Island on tuesday night. Caught blues all night, and I gave away 5 of them to 15 pounds. I don't like keepimng blues--can't really eat them, and I was holding out for a striper for the table. Captain announced at midnight "lines up, time to go home to bed", so we wound up....except I had a bite on the first crank. Son of a gun, it felt tough, and kept diving for the bottom. Eventually we got it alongside the boat, netted the fish and pulled in.....a 35 pound Striper. It was over 40 inches and as fat as a hog. What a magnificent fish! It was a fine way to end a good, stinking hot night.

Awesome. That's a good sized striper. I couldn't agree more about keeping blues, I can never believe it when I see guys keeping several big ones. Just hope they're all being consumed. Were you fishing with live eels or bunker?

Lets see a pic!
"The sportsman lives his life vicariously. For he secretly yearns to have lived before, in a simpler time. A time when his love for the land, water, fish and wildlife would be more than just part of his life. It would be his state of mind."

Congrats! That's a really big striper.
Yea, catching a big keeper striper on a night blues trip is like
catching a big brown in Kensico. It happens, but don't count on it.
If the odds were a little better I'd be trying too.
Agree Blues aren't fit for the table most of ther time.
Out of curosity how much is the night blues fare now? $65?

My friend took a photo with my camera, and now I need to figure out how to get the photo off the camera and to this website. The head alone weighed 5 pounds. It was a big bad boy. Caught the fish on a chunk of bunker, "floating" without any weight. Just the line, the steel leader and the hunk of bait. I was lucky to have been in the water qa while, under all the blues that were slaughtering bunker at the surface. Smart and efficient stripers were all under the carnage, eating for free. Except one!
