spots and boats
« on: June 06, 2010, 03:37:36 pm »
Hello,
I have lived in new york all my life and love freshwater bass fishing.  From reading the boards and doing some research I know there are some great spots in westchester and ct.  However, I do not have a boat, but i do have a trolling motor.  So i usually go to some camps in maine to do some fishing as they have boat rentals.  Eventhough maine is beautiful and has some great fishing it is quite a car ride.  I have been to candlewood lakes but it is so busy with water sports on the weekend it is unfishable.  So i would appreciate it if any could mention some places that are closer to manhattan that have boat rentals and fishing.  Thanks.

Welcome yanks555giants,
Thanks for the links Unc! I may have to give Uncle Crappie a share in the website although I lose money. LOL

I've only rented at Wampus, it's small but it was a nice day out with my son. No lunkers but decent bass and panfish.

Best Always,
Vinny

Uncle and Vinny,

Thank you very much for your posts, especially since I know fishing "spots" are a close kept secret.  Having a very young brother and friends with sons it is important to be able to spend time with them and show them values (like the good old days).  Hopefully these spots will provide this and some bucket mouths  ;D

With that said, I saw there were quite a few views to this post and hope more people would share such places.   Others and myself are not asking for your top secret spot or where exactly on the lake to fish , just a chance to have fun, kick back, and maybe get some tension on the line.  Since you were so open i think it is only fair to share the links that I know (even though they are not as close).

I heard amos and candlewood good if you have your own boat. There used to be a great website in black and green font but i can no longer find it.

Good luck and happy fishing.

Without being overly specific, on spots, we do have a very generous crowd here on the forums. On some forums you may be tracked down and shot for mentioning that lakes even exist. LOL

I rented a boat on Wampus 5 years ago and went out fishing with my then 11 year old son.  How can you not share such memories for others to do the same.

Best to All,
Vinny

Some good shore spots for kids:

Any of the reservoirs through Putnam and Westchester Counties.
Oppermans Pond in Pleasantville.
Tons of streams in Putnam Valley.
Lake Gleneida in Carmel.
Bunch of small little Lakes, Ponds everywhere....just drive around, pull over fish, and repeat.

Wampus is a great spot . make sure you got real worms for the kids and small beatle spin jigs for you it will get all fish including pickerel  rubber worms will only get the bass most times . If your buds enjoy it this year and your able to get enough time of to use it ,get a DEP pass And a 12 or 14 ft boat and store it  on the shore like the rest of us. Thats  the  best  you could do New croton has more than enough spots left .Trout lake spots are tough but you need a boat on a res and get on a waiting list could take years for some.
