West Branch outlet?
« on: June 06, 2010, 03:27:05 pm »
Anyone ever fish the west branch outlet? If so, what were the results.  I've fished there twice with no luck.

Hello, everybody! I would put my question more generally. Has anybody fished any local streams recently at all? With hot weather like this the conditions are not expected to be great. But still..I`m particularly interested in Amawalk outlet. Thanks!

??

I was only wondering about the west branch outlet though, it's really remote and a beautiful stream.  I've read a lot about it having lots of great pools and pocket waters.  I checked it out a few times and fished it twice with no results.  I was just wondering if anyone fished this particular stream and gotten good results.

I was there a couple of times at the beginning of June. Water was thin and warm, the same with the Amawalk. Unless they have increased the flow I cant see them as being fishable. Check out the USGS for flow rate, its usually pretty accurate.

There is def. trout in that stream though. There is a nice pool right at the outlet.  The water was really clear, I gave off my position and I saw a nice brown swim off.  If i had to guess size, I would say 16".  Will try it again one day.

You ever fish boyd's corner stream?  That little stream rocks.  Produces a tons of trout and its always empty.  I have never gone there and seen another person fishing.  Its small but plenty of trout.

I haven't fished Boyd's but I heard it's nice. At days like these trout finds more comfortable conditions in small shaded streams with cool water, I believe.

Some news on West Branch outlet...First I went to check out Boyds Corner. It looked fishy but I found it tricky to fish..I didn`t check the temperature but it seemed to be cold enough. I thought that West Branch might be a better option so I drove there. I started at around 1:30 just below Rt 6 Bridge. No surface activity at that time but later, around 3 pm at Split Rock pool they started jumping. I was not sure whether they were chasing some insects.. I saw no hatch. Some very small trouts jumped high.  One of those attacked my indicator fly (yellow humpy) with splashy refusal. I tried some midge patterns, and they worked! I was able to hook 2 small browns. They say the majority of WB population is 6-8", what I caught was in this range) but still lots of fun and solitude. It was cloudy and I think this helped me to catch fish. Really it is a nice stream with a number of good pools and runs.

I fished boyd's corner today and the west branch outlet. Boyd's stream was in really bad shape, super low water and a huge tree fell right by the honey hole that holds a lot of the trout.  I left within 15 minutes.  I checked out west branch outlet and right under the bridge on route 6 i saw a bunch of smaller browns. I had two hits using a size 16 lightening bug nymph.

Well, the water should be a little up after all these rains. I didn`t find USGS information on West Branch outlet. Do they provide it?
