« on: June 05, 2010, 02:24:55 pm »
Not getting the perch like i should. Finding crappies but undersized 7 in most common on worms ,than fishing the spot with tiny tube s for fun. Got 10 in 2 hours today .Just no keepers. Is anyone getting perch in 20 ft ? they dont seem to be shallow 5 to  12 ft is getting the crappies. I think im not staying close enough to the bottom . The water in croton got very warm fast  :-\

New Croton There seems to be lots of under 9 inch perch In the shallows again ! Ive been getting schools near over hanging live  brush and trees anywhere it is 5 to 8ft deep close to shore .Some shore lines are steep all the way into the water Combined that with live overhang and nonstop action on tubes, grubs and beetlespins. Now if I could find those big ones in the deep The crappie bite has been steady but all under 9 in .They should lift the size limit and step down the 25 to 20 fish limit. All local crappie are stuck at 7 in or so worse in some small ponds like mohansic.Anyone agree with me on this?

Now the Crappie are gone in Croton and the perch are everywhere LOL .They must be there hanging in deeper water, but Ive got none in my past 3 trips .If you like perch fishing and you have  a Croton boat go soon  the bite may slow in the next 2 weeks and they may spread out .Get there at 6pm to sundown fish tiny tubes with glitter, grubs, beetle spins,or small minnows. They are all over the rt 100 side inside weed edge has 6 to 9 in everywhere out side edge has some big ones Small jigs got me a few over 10 in and fat. Some big whites are coming up my bud got this one. No size limit on these yellow guys and 50 a day sounds  crazy but dont feel bad about taking 20  ! I dont see white perch listed in the regs ?

I was at Bog Brook this morning and a couple of guys in boats were talking about there being a lot of white perch action. If you do venture there it's probably got some good shore fishing since the water is down and the shoreline's getting bigger each week. We had to carry our boat at least 50ft to get to the water.

Best Always,
Vinny

Thanks Vin with the shore exposed like you say it is a great time to fish a new water .I guess you are looking at all that exposed structure.I like to bass fish from shore.I never have great luck with perch or crappie this time of year if im not in a boat. I always go for my ulralight first LOL .My UL  lets my locate action and dead spots then if im getting lots of little bites or a few small panfish ill throw some bass lures around the hot spots then move on .Most times big bass and those pikerel circle the same structure as the panfish .A few weeks ago at around 830 pm after i caught and released 15 under 9 in perch one died his gill was bleeding. So he was small 7in floating around the cove for 10 mins flipping every min or so .Then as I start to  row back to the car a huge Im mean Huge Musky or Pikerel flew out of the water to eat this perch. It looked browish orange to  me ! I almost pissed my pants Im sure he was watching me and then took the first advantage he saw . Since this sighting I ve got 30 lb test braid on a old over stiff rod, fresh supply of metal leaders  and a 5 in storm perch color kicking swimbait LOL . I may try some small perch on a big hook also !

Last night 630pm to 900pm I got three 11 in Perch on small live minnows a few smaller ones and tiny whites. Also a 1 1/2 Bass on my UL rod 4 lb line.Had the  three identical 11 perch in a fish basket alive hoping for 2 more so could get 10 or so fillets.Ran out of minnows from fiesty whites and warmouths  and the tiny tubes kept getting small ones.So I let them go back on the honey hole they came from to fatten up! Sorry No pics my phone batt died before the biguns .Anybody into keeping Croton is Hot for perch right now .Crappies are deep now and Ive only found stunted crappies mostly but I know there there!I'm getting a depthfinder in a week or so I'm gonna have some new exploring to do.

Hey  any tips for smallies in Croton this time of year ? Depth, rocks, outside weed edge? I would get smallies around the Two little Islands in Cross River, and outside weededge .I never got any smallies in Croton yet .

I just used yesterday midday a bottom bouncer rig for walleye To get open water perch on the bottom for the first time .Even lots of wind drift the 3/4 ounch rig stayed in contact with the bottom.Small shiners on a hand tied double snell with the trihook stinger worked great in bad conditions that nothing else would work in . 4 small under 10" perch and a 13'bass caught in 15 to 25 ft made the day in the sun ok !Im going to get a crawler rig see how that works on the bottom bouncer.
