Amawalk Outlet or Cross River?
« on: June 02, 2010, 05:10:38 pm »
I'm fairly new to fly fishing and trying to decide where to give it a shot this weekend... does anyone have any info or an opinion on which area is best right now? Any other advice is welcome, I'll probably be nymphing, but I'm open to suggestions...

Also, are ticks going to be an issue in either area?

hello,

Well, ticks are always an issue with outdoor activities.  Just think of them as being insects and not to fear them.  Just remember to check yourself and dont let ticks ruin your fun.

The amawalk outlet is nice, you could also try the croton falls outlet off buterville road right by rt 202.  The east branch outlet is nice too in the village of brewster.  I had some luck fishing boyd's corner outlet off i think rt 303 or 301?  Its going towards cold spring.  Its a small small stream thats maybe 8 feet wide and about 1.5mile long, but i have pulled large trout out of pockets in there with nymphs.  i was pretty surprised pulling out 16" brown trout from such a small stream.  I had 5 hits in a row last time i went.  I never fly fish on the weekends though because the streams are so busy.  Hitting any of these streams during the week is much better if you have the time.  Good luck.

I've checked out both Cross River and Amawalk during long weekend. Here's what I saw. CR is almost dry. Never seen it in such conditions. I hope trouts were able to safely find a refuge. Otherwise...Amawalk was much better since there's relatively stable discharge from the reservoir. I even was able to fish and catch few browns. But this was a difficult task under such conditions. I was very careful to release fish promptly, didn't take them from water. It's difficult for trout to recover these days. Maybe, it was not a good idea at all to try catching them in warm water.

Yeah, probably best not to fish the smaller streams at all in these conditions. I was in the Catskills over the weekend and was amazed at how low the water is everywhere. Some smaller streams were bone dry.
