Chain pickerel in Kensico
« on: May 30, 2010, 11:25:21 am »
Hi

I just got my permit for Kensico and would like to fish for chain pickerel. I will be there in July for 1 week, I now live in Georgia.
Can anybody recommend the best lures used for them in the summer along with some decent shore spots? I am thinking spinnerbait or spoons which I have caught them on before.
You can message me if you prefer.
I don't need your honey hole just general area.

Thanks so much

Patrick

Patrick,
Welcome to the forums. I've caught pickerel on spinnerbaits and generally anything flashy when I've gone for bass. Not sure where they are exactly. I've caught them generally in shallow areas up near the Area 3 arm of the lake. I believe they are scattered throughout the lake. I've also caught them in nearby Croton Reservoir.
Good Luck,
Vinny

Kensico definitely has chain pickerel but unlike some small ponds, I run into
small juveniles or really big ones. The northern coves, such as Area 3 as Vinny mentioned
is ideal with a max depth of 25ft and lots of weedbeds. That said, the biggest pickerel
I've ever caught was over a weedbed way down towards the dam facing the deepest
part of the reservoir that went 25 inches.
Good Luck!

Hi

How is that Wampus pond? Is it easily accessed around it to fish from shore?

Thanks

Patrick

They used to rent rowboats. I took my son there 5 years ago when I was first getting back into fishing. Not sure how much shore access is there.

Best always,
Vinny

Wampus has good fishing! Boats are only on weekend for rental .Shore is very tough lots of shallow weeds .http://www.westchestergov.com/parks/parkslocations02/WampusPond.htm
Mohansic is your best bet for cheap boat rentals parking fee though .Big pool also for after fishing cool down lots of grills http://nysparks.state.ny.us/parks/148/details.aspx boat rentals mohansic
New Croton is full of Big pickerel no good shore fishing except 100 south of 35.
Make sure at kensico or croton you get DEP pass online wampus and mohansic its not needed.

Was coming back from a work retreat in MA and decided to hit 684 home, to take me past the reservoir. Had the rod and reel with me but never had the chance to sneak away from the retreat so I was a bit desperate to get some fishing it. Stopped at the bridge on Rye lake and after about 10 casts hooked up with a nice fighting fish. It was heavy so i figured maybe carp, but when I pulled it in and it turned on its side it was yellow and striped. I was like--what the HECK is that?! I realized it was a pickerel--my first. Pulled it onshore and sure enough, nice size about "13 - "14--but I friggin left my phone in the car so had to put it back without a picture. But man was a beautiful fish. Returned it quickly but it took a while to recover before diving.

Note--i did NOT stick my hand in that mouth, used my pliers to pull out the hook.

Anyway--was excited to catch something different and unexpected. After getting skunked my last 2 trips it was kind of a relief. My wife was like "you stopped to go fishing?"  ;  )
