Filler + main line
« on: April 23, 2010, 10:55:25 am »
I'm thinking of spooling a filler plus a mainline in order to save money on the
more expensive mainline. I've done this on conventional reels but can this
be done on a spinning reel without the connection knot causing a problem?
Thanks for opinions.

Ken, I have tried and it worked, just duct tape. Put your backing on to a comfortable spot, snip and carefully cut/measure tape and go around 1 time,no knot needed,Phish.

Ken, I also just purchased the Seaguar Visx, fluro, 10# main line at 250 yrd spool.My thought was a leader material,(against my better judgement at that many yds.) to my shocking surprise it was roughly the same diameter as 6lb,Trilene. So, I'm running 10 with 10 fluro this season to start,the knots were strong and the line ran limp and strong, Howie.

Hey Guys, Not sure if this is related to a topic I just posted but, are you saying that you run duct tape around the empty spool, one time, and then tie the line using the tape as the new surface?

Paul;

The idea is to put the backing on your reel up to a certain point. Then snip it and put tape over it,
thereby creating a smaller-capacity spool. Then put your main line on top of the tape.

By backing, you mean some type of other line?

Yes, usually old and heavier diameter,it'll never be used. It's put on to save you money on the good line. If ur bait fishing, 100 yds. of line would last a long time. Fishing reel companies and line manufacturers are in kahoots, in most cases. Think about it, if you spool up a typical spinning reel, it can hold 250 to 300yds of say 8lb test. Why would you need that much line?, if a fish was to run 150 to 200yds out, your never going to get him anyway,lol,Phish.
