Hey guys and gals ..BECAREFUL WITH TICKS AT CROSS RIVER!!!!!!On Wednesday afternoon my cousin and I went to Cross River which is now to me officially "TICK PIT" immediately I see a tick on my cousin's life vest!!! After checking ourselves out go in to the water and catch nothing but ticks and gnats!! So with almost 2 dozen shiners I went to Kensico 4-1-2010 just to find back braking wind and no fish in the boat..Today finally able to get 2 lakers in the boat, and a few lost on the way to the boat..Only one keeper 21 inches and a 17 inch short which I threw back in..

Hi! I don`t have a boat and fish from the shore (occasionly). There are very few spots...So it`s not promising to hear more and more of ticks danger at Cross River.  I`ll pay more attention to protecting myself.
It`s a pity but I have never caught trout from Cross River reservoir :( Only bass, a lot of yellow perch and sometimes chain pickerels.

The "sandbar" on the north shore near the dam is not only a very popular fishing spot
but you can actually see the ticks in the sand. I wouldn't recommend fishing that
spot other than the months of December, January and March. Of course if you did that
you're pretty much assured of catching trout.

Thanks, Ken! That`s true. I heard that it fishes best in winter-early spring. But I tried around the "sandbar area" and further along the shore only in summer and fall. There are nice coves, so I tried to explore a bit, at that time maybe more fixed on casting than catching fish:). And, sure, I saw the guys landing huge ones both fom the shore and boats. I`ve always preferred fishing rivers and streams, you know, reservoir fishing for me is just a way to change a little bit. In general, I think I like Cross River more than Kensico because of the special feeling, kind of secrecy, it gives to me.

I sometimes see people fishing around the bridge (where Rt35 and Hgwy121 meet). It`s well known that areas where streams flow into reservoirs offer some good fishing. What do you think of lower section of Cross River (stream) in terms of chances to meet larger reservoir trout there? To me, it looks rather like a section of the reservoir itself. I mean, the area just above the bridge.

I've heard that the whole channel right up to the 35/120 corner is good
in the fall. I know of two decent sized Browns that were taken there and
I suspect that the spawning instinct and the stream inlet had something to
do with it, regardless of whether they actually spawn or not. I've never seen
anyone fishing that stream side past the bridge.

You can also fish the river (Cross River) in the Ward Pound Ridge reservation. You will need a Westchester County Parks pass. I was wondering if anyone fished this spot and could share ideas for fishing Browns in a fairly fast moving river?

Thanks, Tom! I`ve fished the Cross River at the WPR several times. It`s a beautiful stream, fishing there you feel like being very far from the noise of the city. I found very useful information about this stream in a broshure published by the Trout Unlimited Westchester Chapter. In the Park below Kimberley bridge it is No kill section. I use my smallest fly rod to fish there with nymphs and small bucktails. But I think you can also use light spin tackle there. I`ve heard it has own population of brookies, but I haven`t had any luck with them. They are just very-very spooky :) You can also encounter larger reservoir trout, especially later in the season (closes Sept 30.). Hope it helps.

Thanks, Ken! Always interesting to read your posts. On sunny spring days I also saw (through polarized glasses) nice smallmouths cruising the area right under the surface. Next time I`m there I`ll offer them a popper ;D
