boat on papacton
« on: March 29, 2010, 01:07:54 pm »
I finally put a boat on papacton res after 15yrs of shore fishing. I was hoping for a few boat fishing techniques when fishing for Brown Trout. Do you troll or just float around... Live bait or spoons... Depth of bait or lure...I have always casted a Krocadile as far as I could from shore and varied my retrieve. Thanks in advance for any help. P.S. Nice site!!!

>Do you troll or just float around... Live bait or spoons... Depth of bait or lure.

If you want to troll, you can use live/dead sawbellies, live/dead shiners, crankbaits, spoons
what have you. Early spring you can flatline troll (mono or braid) covering depths from surface in the morning down to 20ft as the sun gets higher in the sky. Sometime in June/July a thermocline will set up at say 30, 40 ft and that's where the trout will be. So if you want to go after them trolling you'd need to use of the several methods (trolling sinkers, downriggers, leadcore) to get down to where they are.
You can also cast from the boat and every spring the bass guys invariably catch some browns throwing
jerkbaits and any baitfish imitating lure. I haven't had too much luck with that though as browns are really
wary on the surface and I often spook them. The most effective method is probably live bait fishing with sawbellies but hopefully phishahn the guru of baitfishing for browns in Pepacton and the northern reservoirs can fill you in. You might want to read through the various past topic threads as there is a wealth of information.

You can also baitfish

nysptsman,
Welcome to the site. I had a great experience on Pepacton last year meeting up with a couple of great trout fishermen. Howie (phishahn) is a semi regular here in the forums and his buddy TP are regulars on Pepacton. My experience was with live bait on floats but we saw all kinds of guys out there doing different things. The brown trout are amazing in that lake.

Best Always,
Vinny

Thanks Ken and Vinny, So I can throw a shiner 5 to 8 feet under a bobber and float around and have a decent chance at hooking a brown in spring? Or should I row around with it? Thanks

If I knew the waters and where to target I'd baitfish.
If I were fishing new waters, I'd probably troll.
Not just to cover more ground but to learn the bottom depths and structures.
If trolling live shiners I'd troll one line with a 1/8 or 1/4 oz split shot, and the other
with a 1/2 oz keel sinker. Trolling live shiners seems best with a slow presentation.

Sure you can. In fact a portable fish finder is an absolute must for any reservoir
boat fishermen whether seeking bass or trout.
You can get models under $100.

Nice, I have one that i believe will work great. I thought I was going to have to work alot harder. Depth finder will make it a lot easier. I picked up a few Keel sinkers and am going to give the shiners a go. How far back do you let the troll out? Sorry for all the questions, as you know I'm just starting this boating thing. Thanks, Steve

You want your lines out a minimum of 100ft. A lot of guys will troll 120-200ft out for browns
to get the offering as away from the boat as reasonably possible.
If you have line counter reels it's easy. Otherwise you can use "pulls" by pinching the line
close to your reel and pulling out a length and counting them as you let out the line.
Each "pull" is generally considered a foot and a half. Or you can just wing it with "lots and lots" of line out. :D
Don't hestitate to ask anything as chasing trout from shore and from boat are two different ball games.

Hello and welcome NY.  First it's Pepacton, like Ken said.Where is your boat located? Next, as soon as sawbellies are available, lose the shiners. There's aload of info you'll need to digest and it'll come with time. I'm planning the second annual Pepacton gathering this July. I would encourage you and all Westchester guys to come up if possible. It's July 6th thru the 9th, Tuesday thru Friday. We share lots of info and techniques.Would just like to clarify one thing Ken said,if you are going to drift live bait,it doesn't need to be that far from the boat. If ur using a float, and can control the depth then ok.When the thermocline sets up, you want to be at that 32-40 foot range and possibly less at times and you want to keep your bait in those zones so counting out line with the proper keels is necessary. Keels are an excellent choice as they tend not to twist the line as much and are easily interchangeable when more/less weight is desired, be sure to use a snap swviel on one end and a swviel on the other, be sure to buy good quality ones to help with the line twist. Also, wouldn't be caught on the water w/o a depth finder.Long rods, good rold holders, sharp hooks, and fluro leaders are a few things to add to the show.Stay in touch, I'll be away next week, I'll make a trip up to Pepacton on April 14th, just a recon mission and checking out all of our boats and getting the permit stickers on, also will try a few casts but no major effort this round. Tight Lines, Phish.

Phish,

Please keep that trip info for July updated. The last one sounded great and I would like to try and make it this year...even for a day or two.

Phish,                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              I have an appointment with DEP to get the boat sprayed tomarrow, April 2nd. I plan on getting the sticker then taking it to a spot that I havent even determined as of yet. Nothing like waiting till the last minute right!! You know that I am new to this boat thing and I am trying to do a little research and find the best spot for my boat to be placed. I shore fish the Murphy Hill Rd. area a little bit and was thinking about putting it there but I am not sure about the water depth in that area? I am open for sugestions. Again I want to thank you guys for the info and I would really like to get together in July for a few days and learn from you guys.

NY, I don't know where Murphy Hill Road is.I would say a popular spot is at Huntley Hollow. We have a few boats there. The Power lines is easy walk/access and has some real deep water.I'm very confident in saying that there is deep water, or deep water close by, no matter where you put the boat. Cat Hollow is also a nice spot and is not far from the dam, where the deepest water is, about 160 feet or so.

As far as the July trip goes I'll keep all posted. I'm going to book 2 rooms when I'm up 4/14. There is no comittment, just let me know how many days you will be able to stay. Unless something major comes up. I'll be up for the 4 mornings and three nights, Phish.

Murphy Hill is right across from Huntly Hollow. Right on the powerlines. Maybe we will run into each other. Steve
