New tactics for Kensico?

With Wade having moved up to Cross River, anyone not coming down from the north
to Kensico come up with any ideas as far as live bait is concerned?
I figure I'm going to be going from using mostly artificials to all artificials.

Ken,

  I'm in the same boat as you.  Only place I can think of is Sportsman's Den in Greenwich and that is just as much driving as going up to Wades or Bob's and back. Maybe longer.

I thought about baitshops in NJ/CT but then I started wondering if that's even
legal now with the tight control over baifish and the requirement to have the
purchase receipt.

Next time I'm in Greenwich I'll stop by the shop and ask the owner about the purchase receipt requirements in Conn.  I also want to see if he has sawbellies or just shiners.

I'm in the same boat, so to speak. Going to all artificial lures, mainly soft rubber Storms--4 inch and 5 inch. It is a pity we have lost the very-conveniently-located Wade's....a real pity. I loved live-lining shiners. Can't see dricving 30 miles each way to buy live bait....

i hear that Berkley gulp minnows kill with browns on the Great Lakes.. Curious if jigging them here would do any difference..

I will experiment at some point this season. Maybe even opening weekend?

C'mon, guys, don't tell me you wouldn't go to Bob's or to new Wade's location for sawbellies, even if you knew lakers wouldn't take anything else but sawbellies?  And we all know there are such days on Kenciko, don't we?
I, personally, admit: I did get up an hour earlier and drove additional 30 mls to Bob's and back to Rt 22 Bridge just to catch this extra hour of dawn bite at times when Wade was opening his store at 5AM and John did at 4.  Was I the only one?
Yes, it's a challenge to catch them on artificials, it may be more fun sometimes, but what if it doesn't work and sawbellies do?  I still want to catch them and would do whatever it takes.  Wouldn't you?

Yeah, I don't figure this either. Bobs is just a 15 minute trip from Kenisco. From area 13, it takes me as long to travel over to Wades old place in Hawthorn as it does to get to Bobs.

I fished with sawbellies just once, along with shiners, and I caught more trout on the Rye side, in deep water, with shiners. go figure. It just depends I suppose. We'll give soft artificials and some deep diving rapalla's a shot and see what happens. 12 days to opening day for boats on Kensico! And wouldn't you know it, I have to go to an all day business mtg! but April 2 is Good Friday and we also have Easter Monday off, so it will be a fantastic weekend of good fishing--weather permitting.

 You're right, I'll be taking the ride for bait.

I think that whether one makes the trip up to Katonah/CR to buy bait and come back down to Kensico really depends on how determined you are to baitfish and how much time you have to fish.
Baitfishing gives me the occasional break from trolling, and is more suited to fishing with a buddy cause you can relax and chat rather than building your back muscles hauling two people around.
If you have a full/half day to fish going to get bait isn't too much of a problem.For some guys
picking up bait and coming back down isn't much time, but for those coming from south and west, it does
add nearly an hour. So if I have say only 3-4 hours to fish I don't want to spend an extra hour just driving.
To be honest I'm not so concerned about Lakers because I think when they are hungry they are gluttons and will take dead bait, pieces of cut bait, live bait both sawbellies and shiners and are suseptible to jigging both metals and softbaits. It's for the Browns that I think I'd want live sawbellies particularly in the hot thermocline months.

You CAN buy live baitfish from CT ot NJ and use them in NY.

The Sportsman's Den in Greenwich has downsized and unfortunately this means a lot less stock.  I used to count on them to have the plugs I need but I guess I'll have to order off the internet more now.  Also, he has shiners but no sawbellies. He said he may start carrying them in a couple weeks but he didn't seem to convincing to me.
