"I've fished a lot of lakes from shore, but Kensico is tough. Funny thing--I'm not even seeing the panfish or bait balls in the coves or under the laydowns that I'm used to seeing on other lakes. Could it be that with this reservoir you've got to be able to get around (as in you really need a boat)?"

Brooklynite;

The panfish along the shorelines dissappeared about 2 weeks ago with the drop in water temp.
Kensico, like all the reservoirs does have it's "hot" times and "cold" times and it may be a little
tough right now with the season change and waters mixing. But it's going to stabilize very soon.
Depending on the time of year, I've caught more fish in less time and with obviously less work
from shore than from my boat.

Ken, what plan of attack would you recommend for browns or lakers this time of year? I got skunked last time too. I just got an Eagle Cuda sonar and a line counter, so I figure I'll try to locate where the fish are holding and drop a sawbelly as close to that depth as I can. I'm in Area 1, so it's a bit of a row to get to the deeper water. I don't mind rowing up there, but are the really deep sections the only parts that are going to be productive right now? What surface temperature would be cold enough for browns to move into Area 1?

Glad you had a good day out Biggamee! Wade was out of sawbellies. I'm gonna try the Rye side next time--which area do you recommend? the cove or pumphouse? and were you freelining or floating the bait?

And Ken--thanks for the info--fishing a reservoir requires finesse I see.
The tug is the drug.

Hey Brooklynite ...there's other bait stores ....I personally unless I'm forced to (meaning every store in westchester doesn't have) won't use shiners...The natural baitfish are sawbellies..For a few extra dollars ...BUY SAWBELLIES!!!!!!!

Chris;

What's the max depth down that channel to the main body of Kensico?

As far as I know it's about 20-25 feet at its deepest. I guessing it would have to get pretty cold there to hold any trout, right?

Early Dec through early May I would guess.
