Harriman State Park
« on: October 05, 2009, 03:05:53 pm »
Hey Guys,

I'm planning on camping Saturday night (10/10/09) at Harriman State Park in Bear Mountain.  It looks like they have a couple of nice sized lakes nearby, anybody ever been or know of anybody who has been fishing here?

Thanks again,
Paul

Hey Paul, I normally camp at Beaver Pond in Harriman. It's right next to lake Welch and there are a few other lakes in the immediate area. Lake Sebago, Tiorati just to mention a couple. I haven't fished for anything other than shore fishing for panfish at Welch and Tiorati but supposedly there is bass to be had according to DEC. Check on the website. There are contour maps for a few of the lakes and species availability. I think carry-in boats are allowed but I would check with DEC.

Good Luck,

Thanks Angler,

I saw those lakes on google maps, I also read some posts regarding these lakes from another site, it seems like this may be a good place to fish.  My main concern is avoiding the heavily fished areas by other city slickers camping in the park.  I plan on being out there Sat night and Sun morning, I'll share my results when I get back.

Went camping at Beaver Pond Camp Grounds this weekend; headed out to the lakes on Sat. night about 5:30.  Didn't catch anything but found so many places to fish just by driving around the area and pulling over on the sides of the road.

FYI, I was informed that they are draining Lake Welch, and in a lot of areas you can see all the bottom structure.

Very convenient, only 20 min over the Tappanzee and very easy to find.

I'm headed back up to Beaver Pond Campgrounds and was wondering if anyone had any additional info on these lakes, would anyone happen to know where to get bait up there?

I grew up in Rockland and fished many of those lakes when I was a kid. I'd tie my pole on my bike and ride from New City; it was a long ride, but at least it was mostly downhill going home. I'm afraid my info would not be of much use now as I was hitting them in the 60's. There were some fun little streams too, like Tiorati Brook and the one coming out of Lake Welch. Lake Tiorati as well as Stahahi, Skanatatee, used to be great for bass and pickerel. Askoti and Island Pond were trout lakes. There are others that I can't even remember the names of. Some like Stahahee were closed until the camp season was over around Labor Day.

Hey Joseph,

When I went, I fished with nightcrawlers from the damn, it's a short walk down the path, through the camp grounds, and I believe its accessible all night.  We got some pretty large sunnies, but nothing else.   We also took a ride down the street, there are a lot of areas of areas were you can pull off the road and fish, some areas seem to be more heavily fished.  I would definately suggest taking a ride and exploring the area while trying to find quite areas to fish!

Good Luck!!
