Suspending minnow
« on: April 04, 2009, 12:15:16 pm »
If a suspending lure, minnow, swimbait, hard or soft, is trolled at a depth
deeper than it's normal "suspending depth" by way of weights, planer, downrigger
whatever,  when stopped, does it sink? rise? or simply suspend at the forced deeper depth?

I would have to think it would suspend at it's "forced" depth, good question.

That would be ideal if it suspends at the forced depth.
I've had others tell me that anytime you are forcing a lure
deeper than where it normally suspends you create a floater.
Which makes sense too.

That also might depend on length of leader. Creating a floater? not sure,it's already down, what is the theory?

From what I've been told, suspending lures are finely balanced so that
they are sinkers up to a certain depth and floaters above that same depth.
For example, if one replaced the two original treble hooks with larger ones
making the lure heavier, it would now sink beyond it's set suspending level.
Similarly in reverse, if a suspending lure is forced below it's suspension level
withot any weight change, it would float upwards. All this is I guess theory
since I've never seen what really happens.
