Croton Reservoir - Lakers and Browns?????
« on: March 23, 2009, 11:15:46 am »
Hey guys...I'm new to this website as well as freshwater fishing on a boat...I've got a great 14' on New Croton and some guys from work have mentioned there being Lakers and Brown in there...I know u have to fish Lakers deep and that they like either shiners or sawbacks.  How would u set them up deep and how would you fish the Browns???

Thanks in advance guys!!!

i hate to tell you but there are no lakers in new croton and i don't believe there are any browns in there either. I don't have a boat at new croton but from what i've heard it is a great largemouth bass reservoir. New Croton is also one of, if not the best all around panfish reservoir. Once while leaving bobs bait and tackle a guy pulled in with a stringer of the largest yellow perch i have ever seen, the smallest had to be over 2 pounds :o. well anyway good luck this season.  ;D

YPD,
Welcome to the forums. Sorry to say, trout aren't known to frequent any parts of Croton. Titicus is your best bet if you are set on targeting trout. Kensico and Cross River are excellent but don't have any open areas to move your boat. You'd have to make an appointment, pull the Croton boat, bring it to DEP in Mahopac, and then set it down on Titicus.

There are great bass in Croton along with the aforementioned panfish.

Good Luck This Season,
Vinny
PS: I'd guess Yonkers Police Dept. since I'm a Yonkers boy originally (YPD)

Fisherman14 and Vinny...thanks for the response...I was kinda curious being Mike at the DEP office told me there wasn't much of either trout there.  The guy I work with SWEARS he's nailed a few by the damn.  Either way I plan on hitting the lake hot and heavy this year, especially being I just bought a "fish" finder...I may either get a 2nd boat late in the season for Titacus or share boats with someone.

Yeah Vinny...u got me...lol

Guys best of luck on the season!!  BTW does anyone ever nail one of the supposed Tiger Muskies that are stocked in Croton???

Welcome to the board, ypd; good to see more guys otj. I live within the 4th, and work in a small PD about 10 min away.

I only have one boat on Kensico, but like you said, several of the guys here share several boats on different reservoirs. Getting to the DEP boat auction may benefit you, and you may able to pick up another boat to have access to a res more known for trout.

Regarding trout in New Croton: weirder, unexpected things have made it into local waters....like huge striped bass out of that same reservoir. Just because it's not listed as a resident species does not mean there are none in there. I've caught perch out of old, flooded iron ore mines before. I have NO IDEA how they ended up there....but it did provide about 2 hours of fun once we found em lol.

I couldn't help you with muskies. Being I came from farther up north before moving here, the only tiger muskies I've seen have been pulled out of Greenwood Lake.

Most regulars swear the tiger muskie didn't survive after being stocked at Croton years ago. Middle Branch has had some caught but they are few and far between. I tried Middle Branch one night but was skunked.

Best Always,
Vinny

Hey Yonkers26...I'm outta the 4th myself...thanks for the welcome...yeah I was considering the auction thing, however, I realized when I tried last year that any of the good boats go for huge cash...whereas I ended up picking up a really nice boat off a Jack Stewart competitor for a great price.  I may just wait til next year with overtime being what it is not to mention a few pending obligations I really have to take care of first....I shouldn't even have bought the new depth finder that I did yesterday...lol  I did hear about stripers being in the Croton and I look forward to nabbing one hopefully.

Vinny, thanks again...are u outta Yonkers Schools?

Went to Holy Rosary grade school down on Lamartine Ave., then moved up to Chase Ave. in 1969 so it was Emerson then to Gorton High School. Hung out at Trevor Park as a kid playing ball on the fields. Those were the days.

Best to All,
Vinny

Wow small world, Vinny I'm a Gorton grade also, class of '81. I still live in Yonkers(Homefield). I know we both have boats in the same area on Kensico(I bumped into you and couple of other gentlemen coming off the water when my son and I took the boat on it's maiden voyage last spring). Can't wait to get out their this year.
