Which Reservoir ?
« on: January 22, 2007, 03:47:17 pm »
I plan to put a boat on one of the NYC Watershed Reservoirs and was wondering which one.  I'm looking for Smallmouth bass as my main target. Any help would be appreciated.

I have caught nice smallmouths in: Amawalk, Cross River and Bogs Brook. There are more with them, I just havent fished them. Smallies are very underfished in the reservoirs as they are usually deep and hang around dropoffs so you need a fish finder or a lot of luck to find them in numbers. I have a fishfinder...lol!

My 2 cents...

I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of smallmouth bass we caught in Kensico this past season. My main fishing buddy, Arthur, caught 6 in a matter of minutes on a topwater Sammy, not far from the Rye Bridge.

My son and I consistently brought in 2 lb smallmouth on all sorts of tubes and crankbaits. Those were mainly in the waters going up from the Rye Bridge into Area 3.

I don't remember catching a smallie in Croton or Muscoot last season but then again, I didn't have much success there anyway.

Best to All,
Vinny

Vinny,
The fish in my avatar is a 3lb 4oz smallmouth that I caught at Croton.  I know Croton is not known for its smallmouth fishing so that was a big surprise.  I have never tried Kensico yet and from what I heard, kensico is the place for smallmouth.  Everytime smallmouth bass and reservoirs are mentioned in the same sentence Kensico always comes up.  there has to be something to that, huh?  When I try kensico for the first time I might be targeting smallmouth.  If it works out, I would like to get a boat there soon.

kensico is a very large reservoir to learn to fish from a rowboat.the best way to learn it is to fish it with somebody who is a kensico expert.i have fished it a couple of times with guys who weren't and we got skunked every time.

May I echo Vinny's post? 2009 Kensico (Rye side for me) produced a better SMB and LMB catch than trout catches. SMB's, rambunctious wild and crazy mustangs of the water were everywhere--shoreline, deep, shallow, spoons, rapalas, shiners, soft baits....I caught a 4 pounder and it was the most fun I've had in ages battling a fish.

I've only been at this a couple of years, and my boat is north of the Rye bridge on Kensico. I've caught twice as many SM as LM. Man do the put up a fight, good times.
