Fishing Snakes?
« on: September 06, 2008, 10:53:04 pm »
Wondering if any of you have this type of bait. I mainly fish Kensico (which I hear has a "pleasurable" amount of snakes), but this looks like it may work good in bass ponds. Any input?

Yonkers,
All the water snakes I have seen are black.

This is just another top-water/twitch lure... The Helicopter Lure®, The Flying Lure®, The Tornado Lure®, The Banjo Minnow® (still going strong I might add), and now The Fishing Snake® are all TV infomercial fishing lures that promise non-stop strikes on you next fishing trip... I'm not saying they don't work, but they're just as good as any another jig, spinner bait, buzz bait, spoon, plastic twitch bait sold on the market.

To second what the Ferryman has said (kind of), an old tin can cutup and thrown as topwater may catch something at the right time. The snake may work just like everything else. I have seen big black snakes that I grew up calling "Water Moccasins" in the reservoirs.

Best to All,
Vinny

I believe that former poet laureate Samuel L. Jackson said it best when he said, " I want these motherf'n snakes out of this motherf'n reservoir!"

Thankfully i have never seen a snake in kensico. That being said i would love to try those lures, but I've never known anyone in this area that has used them. Plus $40 is a lot of money.

I saw some pretty good reviews of the that guys reel, the wave or something like that.

if anyone wants to go halfsies on those snakes I'm in!

Thankfully i have never seen a snake in kensico.

If you hang out at the rt22 bridge long enough, you'll run as fast as I did when I saw one!

I swear, I cannot believe I ran and took all my stuff with me in as quickly as I did!

He was stealth about it too. He swam tight along the rock wall, so I only saw him when I was looking over the side, and boy was I surprised!

I have also seen a few withering snakes around the shores.. from my boat, luckily!

Once rowed up to a tree on Kensico to get my lure out of it, only to look I'd say about a 4 foot snake eye to eye. Was funny much later in the day when my heart slowed down.

I suspect that in the reservoirs probably 90% of what a Bass eats is baitfish (mostly sawbellies)
and crayfish. A snake like lure probably may work but not as much as in say a small pond scenario
where the bass are forced to eat everything. Still, I've seen water snakes in Muscoot, Cross River and
Kensico. I'm sure they're in all the reservoirs.

Was reading up on poisonous snakes in NY state..they have eastern diamond back and timber rattlers and water moccassins and copperheads as poisonous ones..any of these around the reservoirs?
