anyone here use spoon lures for bass?
« on: August 24, 2008, 01:36:25 pm »
in my never ending quest for catching a bass on the new croton.....with no luck as of yet......i am always trying new lures.  anyway, i was organizing my tackle box last night and i came across a #1 & #3 Krocodile spoon lures that i have had in my tackle box for years....but i always brushed them off as being useless....dont ask me why :-\

after doing my research some more on spoon lures and realizing they are very effective and versatile lures.....does anyone here have any more insight on spoon lures?  has anyone here used spoon lures in the past with any success?  which spoon lure did you use?  how did you fish it?

I've caught a couple large mouth in New Croton with spoons under the rt 129 bridge. I believe I was using a cheap bright yellow spoon with orange dots on it 2 -3 inches long. I let it sink to the bottom, or for a good long while at least (its pretty deep under that bridge). Retrieve by reeling a few feet & letting it fall, this worked well with spinner baits as well.

Last week on Kensico using a silver little cleo (2 - 2 1/2 inches long) I had a smallmouth on for a few seconds near mooring area 10. I was reeling at a consistent but slow retrieve so it would stay several feet under the water. After fighting for several seconds the small mouth performed a spectacular jump & spit the spoon out...

Any fish that eats other fish will hit spoons.
I've caught Trout, LM/SM Bass, Pickerel on spoons.
I've also caught Yellow perrch, White Perch, even Rock Bass
on spoons.
I think spoons are probably one of the mosty simple and versatile
lures around.

thats what i figured about spoon lures.....but i have never really heard too much about them....they seemed simple enough to be used for anything that eats live bait....i wanted to check and see if any of you guys on here have had luck with them on the reservoirs and some of you guys have.....so now i have one more tool in my arsenal for catching bass ;D

You may have seen this post in another topic, but yes they bite on spoons. Caught a few out in the middle with small dipsy divers and Sutton 44's. Copper.   (their hard to find) 35 ft down in late Oct on NC

I don't use them for bass but judging from this pic of one my buddy caught earlier this year they will take them, literally take them.

Yes my bud was using the rapala and when I went to grab him I noticed extra hooks and decided to use the net.  Guess they should have checked their line before that last cast.

"Whats the best spoon to use and size for browns?"

For casting and flat line trolling hands down Krocodiles in 3/8 to 1/2 size.
For LC trolling I use suttons.
