Aquarium owners?
« on: August 22, 2008, 09:53:47 pm »
Anyone have any tanks here? It's fun tailoring things to make your own habitat. I have a 72 gallon bowfront tank, south american theme. I'm hooked on dwarf cichlids. Inside, I have:

10 Apistogramma Cacatuoides (Orange Flash and Double Red strains)...would like to see them to breed.
4 Rasboras
4 Cory Catfish
5 Otocinclus Cats
3 Platies
1 Bolivian Ram
6-10 Ghost Shrimp (they hide well)

This is an old photo. The fish inside have changed a bit:

The evil side of me sees a hook slowly making it's way down lol (joke)  ;D

iused to keep a tank i kept my leftover minnows in it also some perch and sunnies.by the way when they say a fish who swallows a hook will survive they aint lying.i saw them poop em out ;DIt became to much of a hassle to keep clean etc and the yeventuall ya ll died off or killed ate each other.I still use the  air pumps for keeping leftover bait alive.dont work on sawbellies but minnows will make a day or so
heck with it i'm going fishing

I wouldn't mind keeping a native fish like a bass, perch, bluegill etc, but I'm worried about growth. I don't want the fish getting huge, and live feeders start to add up after a while. Space is an issue in my 1BR apt.

Most of the fish in my tank stay under 4", so it isn't too bad. The Apistos kind of look like bass. This one is the first male I had....he was a badass lol. He would come right to the front of the tank, stare you down, and display like he is the man.

I wouldn't recommended it... They make lousy pets.
I kept several as pets many years go... For one thing, the sunnys and yellow perch dirty up the tank quick... All the perch wanted to do was bury his head in the plants all the time... I guess they really hate the light... I also had a small largemouth bass for a while too... It was fun while it lasted, but he grew really fast, and began jumping out of the tank... Just before I was planning to release him back into the wild, he jumped out one last time when I was away... unfortunately, It was his last time.

Btw... That is a really beautiful aquarium set up you have.

Thanks for the compliment. There are people all over youtube who put videos up of their fish....especially a disturbed (and overly happy) individual who puts a mouse into his tank occupied by a hungry LM lol.

Maybe someone will give me a pond someday, and I can make this happen lol.

too expensive

That's a big tank, wow. This is my first so I'm trying to keep it simple. I am pleased how it has come out though.

yeah i use to have them, aquariums was my passion!  I had them for 12 years but at the current moment i do not have any.

I had a 2.5 foot silver arowana for 8 years, teacup stingrays, tiger datnoid, green severum and a clown knife in a 125 gallon.  In a 90 gallon i had 10 discus and gold nugget plecos.  I also had a saltwater reef tank for about 7 years with a mated pair of clownfish and a ton of live coral.  Its def a cool hobby, i do miss it.
