Grassy Sprain Reservoir
« on: May 31, 2008, 06:46:22 am »
Hey everybody, Im new to the boards here.  I live in Yonkers, and a few people have told me there is excellent shore fishing at Grassy Sprain Reservoir, provided you dont get conked with a golf ball.  Anybody have any experience fishing here?  I hear there are both largemouth bass and lake trout...True?

Hi green giant,
This reservoir is not part of the NYC system, so you'll have to check out the local regulations. Haven't seen any fisherman on it.  I remember a while ago someone complaining about the difficult/questionable access to the water, and the "no fishing" signs. I would check with the city of Yonkers or Westchester Department of Parks.  The reservoir undoubtedly has Bass but not likely Lake Trout (not deep enough). It may have Brown Trout which are much more tolerant to higher water temperatures. Good luck. Let us know what you find out. It is a beautiful spot to fish ... if you are allowed!

What's up GG,
Welcome the board!  I have heard that there are alot of fish there and you CAN fish there, but no boats are allowed.  It is very difficult to hit multiple spots there because you will be on foot.  Let me know how it is, if you go.

Welcome Green Giant,

I grew up in Yonkers so you fit in already. Let us know how things go there.

Best Always,

I used to fish Grassy Sprain when I was a kid. We're talking around '68 or thereabouts. At that time fishing was verboten, which you wouldn't have guessed by the numbers of people fishing there. I would fish the flooded trees near, I think it was Jackson Ave?, memory's not clear. This was before the parkway was extended. Caught fish.
Let's be honest, at 15 any fish was a good fish. But I did see some whoppers breaking the water now and then.
Things being what they are today, personally, I wouldn't risk tresspassing or anything so checking with the proper authorites would be a good thing.

I know this is an old post but I thought I'd update it in case anyone is thinking of fishing there this summer.  I fished there several times last summer.  First off, YES you are allowed to fish there. One day I had a few of the groundspeople asking me to fish elsewhere, but as long as you have the proper fishing license they can not tell you to leave.

You can only access the water from the golf course side so you have to park at the golf course and cut through a couple fairways (be careful!).  I did not catch a lot of bass there, but I did catch a few and one was over 3 pounds.  I have no doubt that there are some really big bass in there but you would have to put in some time and effort to figure it out since it's a large body of water with only shore access.  I do believe there are some large trout in there too but haven't targeted them.  A good place to start would be the walking bridge that is straight down and towards the left from the parking lot.  I saw lots of baitfish in that area and a huge laydown and other good looking structure.  Oh, a good time to go is when it's overcast or even drizzly out because you won't have any golfers/golf carts to contend with.

This is great topic why cant they get some Jon boat rentals like wampus or silver lake used to have. I walked in there as a teen 20 yrs ago and with a strike king spinnerbait tossed it near a tree down and bam 4lb bass got a few more all 3lbs or more . what a shame we cant enjoy it . don't think we drink it anymore anyway! If you can fish there I bet if you go there at night leave a photo copy of you fish license on the dashboard and big note with your cell  phone #  any county's or ypd might call you if they want you out .they might give you a break for saving them time to see what your doing! That lake would be a Jitterbug dream come true wit a full moon!

The amount of views this post has is proof they should have 10 rowboats for rental. The already in place park staff at the clubhouse take care of them .Lock up at night and such like the golf carts !Then golf balls wouldnt be a legal issue!LOL

it may have been me in the waders!i have fished there several times but not with great success.i have made an attemp at fishing the entire lake over the last 2 years.parking in the lot and making the walk is the worst part of it,although its fun walking in waders on a golf course.lol...many people fish there, i think mostly for cats?carp and bluegill.i have caught bass up to 5 lbs.on the north bound side of the sprain way past the heavily fished golf course sections..
