Welcome aboard!

My buddy Arthur, who I fish Kensico with, takes out his fly rod once and a while. I'm not that diverse. He usually does it if he sees activity near the surface in early morning or night times. I can't say that's it's worked for him when I've been with him.

I think the key to fishing the reservoirs with any setup is knowing the waters, the available fish, and knowing the locations. Fly fishing isn't a common sight but it may work at times in the right spots. Unfortunately, I don't know any of those kind of spots.

Best Always,
Vinny

Hey, if we're not having fun, why be out there. I'm laughed at all the time for throwing crankbaits when the "experts" say I should be throwing something else.

Best Always,

Vinny,
I have fished with you many times now and I know you don't throw only crankbaits.  The so called "experts" are just not getting it sometimes.  Do what you feel is comfortable to you.  Don't worry what the nay sayers are talking about.  Bye the way crankbaits are great baits and it takes a good angler with a good feel to use them effectively.  If you catch fish with them and have fun with them, by all means continue to throw them.  If you weren't catching anything with them I would tell you to stop also.  I remember that huge smallmouth in Bog brook you lost at the boat on a crankbait.  Keep throwing those cranks.

Remember to have fun out there and who cares who laughs at you.  How did you do with that fly rod you never posted any results?

It's hard to cover water with the flyrod. If you like it do it. It's a satisfying way to fish.

I would try fly fishing there in the spring, perhaps sightfishing. Have other gear ready....

Keep in mind that if one is throwing a bug or popper, and another is throwing a topwater on spinning gear, the spinning guy can cover two to four times as much water as the fly guy.

Also, trolling with fly rod is another viable option with a rich tradition.

Thought I'd open this idea up again.

Anybody slinging flies on the reservoirs this spring? Any suggestions for nice spots for such? If I wade with a fly rod around the inlets from streams that get stocked with trout, am I likely to catch anything?

I've been reading an old book called Flyfishing the Lakes, and am eager to try it.

I brought the ol' fly rod with me last weekend but i didn't use it too much. My friend in the boat was afraid that i was going to hook him in the back of they head. Which was a very real possibility!
I ordered some flies specially made for LM bass, so when they arrive i will use the fly rod more.

I was into all the braids and stuff about a year ago, but then I realized that it really is too good to be true. Firstly, their ranks, such as when they say that 8lb powerpro braid has the same diameter as 1lb mono is quite false. If you look at the actual diameter that is written on the powerpro spool and the diameter on a mono, they differ. Secondly, PowerPro braid is flat. So if you look at it one way, it can look real thin, but when you lay it flat, it is quite wide and visible. Good braid though. I caught an 18 pound carp on 8lb powerpro.

After realizing that powerpro is flat, I started looking for a round braid. Got the SpiderWire Stealth. Also nice, but it still doesn't have all the properties of thin mono. Basically, some 8lb SpiderWire spooled on a quality reel with a little jig doesn't let the jig drop down easily to the floor. The 8lb braid is said to be the diameter of 1lb mono. So I tried 2lb mono and the jig dropped straight down on the same rod and reel. This means that mono still casts better. Maybe I'll try 4lb or 2lb braid, to see if it gets easier to cast tiny lures with, but right now, I'm going to try lightening my drag and using 2-4lb test mono lines. Trilene XL I think is the most popular as it's real soft and has no memory.

I think the previous post was supposed to go in the fishing line section...

I'm going to attempt it come the late spring when the smallies are spawn to post spawn. They should be real active then.

Not sure if the trout on Kensico are into flies as much as other places. I have a feeling they prefer baitfish to flies.

A question about power pro was asked, and I answered.

Didn't know the police patrolled this forum too..
