hey, ive been fishing lakes for bass for years. just recently though, i have gotten into trout fishing. i know almost nothing about it. any advice about gear, lures, or location would be greatly appreciated. Im much more interested in fishing for trout in streams than lakes.
 -thanks

hello,

Ive gotten lots of nice browns and rainbows fly fishing the various streams in the area.  I'm not sure where you are from but in the putnam area, I know a couple of streams that i fish..  Here is a link to all the local streams that you may be interested in:

http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/fish_marine_pdf/nycfshwestput.pdf

Some of the streams its hit or miss.  Like my favorite stream was the boyd's corner 0.5 mile stream.  It is a small stream but wow, you can get some big fish in that stream in the pockets.  Plus ive never seen a person there when im fishing.  One time i got 7 BT within 30 minutes fishing that little stream.    I checked it out recently and the water seemed in really bad shape and a huge tree seemed to have blocked the honey hole.  I think that stream no longer is any good because of that tree that fell down.

You can find stream reports online but i usually plan ahead.  If i know i will be fishing sometime soon, when i get some free time i will drive to a couple of streams and check them out before actually fishing them.  If im happy with what i saw, i usually will fish it within the week.

Ive done spin fishing for trout on lakes but never in streams.  I'm not sure if you are into fly fishing but i got into it about 8 years ago and I really enjoy it.  I've done fly fishing on the lakes but its a lot tougher because you are on a boat and i usually just end up catching SMBs or panfish.

good luck,

john

John, does it make sense to initiate a kind of action within the local TU chapter to remove that tree? Boyds is a public stream, I believe, and this should be possible from a legal point of view. Do you think it is worth trying?

hey AVK,

That would be really awesome because im not sure the last time you were at boyd's stream, that tree may be in the best spot preventing some nice browns from being caught.  Boyd's is a cool little stream because it never gets fished and you can pretty much catch a trout every cast under the bridge in the early spring.  Ive gotten nice 16" browns under the bridge.

Another area that has a huge tree blocking a sweet hole is in the croton falls outlet.  One time last year i was fishing that spot and i saw a huge brown trout that was sunk belly up on the bottom.  Not sure how it died but it was at less 5 pounds, 20+ inches long.
