8 White Perch
« on: August 19, 2010, 09:41:21 pm »
First time this year fishing during the week after work.  Got to Kirk Lake (Mahopac) at 715pm. Fished with my girlfriend from 715pm-815pm.  1st time fishing this spot on Kirk Lake in like 3-4 years.  Used to catch Yellow and White Perch, Crappie, LM Bass, and Catfish from this spot.  We didnt have shiners so we only used Worms and Bobber.  Caught 8 White Perch (all 10" - 12"), 1 tiny Yellow Perch (6"), and 1 Bullhead Catfish (12").  Not bad for 1 hour. Biggest white perch was 13oz. according to my digital scale, so just short of entering it into the derby (1lb. minimum). Oh well.....Pics attached.

Great report and kind of special to me. I caught a lot of perch and sunnies there about 45 years ago.  ;D
I grew up in Yonkers but every summer my family stayed in a bungalow on Genung's Lot on Hill Street (across from the Red Mills entrance). We went down a short path to Kirk Lake every day to swim and fish. Here's one of my favorite shots of my dad fishing with my younger brother. Our beach area was at the south end by the spillway.

Best Always,
Vinny

pretty cool....yea I know where there is a beach area, but i think that area is reserved for people who live in that neighborhood and are part of the Kirk Lake community....The whole lake is pretty much private, like Lake Mahopac.....but there is 1 spot at the other end of lake where there's a road crosses over the lake.  One side of the bridge is literally the end of the lake, and the other side is the beginning of the lake, long and narrow leads to out to the main part........the lake looks like its filled with blowdowns, etc...bet the bass fishing from a boat on there is phenomenal.....even from my spot, years ago i caught quite a few LM Bass over 20", and once saw a kid catch a 5lber, we weight it and everything.
It's funny because the spot I fish from can get you LM Bass, White Perch, Yellow Perch, Sunfish, Catfish, Crappies, and Carp. Tons of species in 1 little area....but its fun because you never know what you might get.

by the way, what part of Yonkers? My Dad is from there (graduated from Gorton), I used to spend some of my summers down there at my grandparents house (Odell Ave.), near Emerson (think it was a middle school)...

Vinny;

I can't help but feel like I've seen that photo before.
Was it used somewhere perhaps by the DEC? Or
some book on fishing in NY?
Could be just my imagination...

Biz,
I graduated from Gorton in 1972 and went to Emerson for 9th grade before that. I started on Woodworth Ave. but moved to Chase Ave (near Roberts Ave) in 1969. There are a lot of Hollands. like me, from that area.

Ken,
Maybe someone owes me money? LOL There aren't a lot of pictures of my dad so it's always a sentimental favorite for me.

Best to All,
Vinny

small world...my Dad graduated in 71', says he knows of a Liza/Elizabeth Holland? and that Vinnue (you) sounds familiar???  Also said he once bought a German Shepherd from a lady who lived on Chase.  My dad's name is Harris, but everyone calls him Hank.

Liza is one of my many cousins from the North End. We have 7 kids in our family and most of the other Hollands had 8 or 9, nice Irish Catholics. Most are second and third cousins so I don't see them much. I was one of the quiet longhairs back then at Gorton.

Best Always,
Vinny
