Couldn't get to the trout waters early this AM because I had driving chores so I slipped out to Croton mid day today, looking for crappie. They're not really in yet ( three barely legal ones, but I did get a nice one, 15", the other day). The yellows, though, were more than cooperative and made up for the slow crappie bite, and I think they're some of my favorite for the table.  And some big pickerel and bass made it a fun although short outing, all on a little crappie jig.[img]0502100937a.jpgimg]

And if I figure out how to post a pic, I got one that was taken of one of the bass by a nice guy bass fishing nearby. His Boca grip weighed it at 5lbs. Not a monster, but fun on a crappie setup.

Canoejon,

To post pictures just click on Additional Options on the left below the reply window (where you type) than hit the Browse button and find the picture you want to attach in your folders.  The max size is pretty generows now - about 2.4 Meg, so if your pictures aren't taken by a 10mgapix camera at least one should fit.  Othervise, use some of the picture editing software (like Photoshop) to reduce the size.

I tried to post the pic and it was loading for hours. I'll try again in a separate reply. It was just a little (eighth ounce?) yellow jig head with  Gary yamamoto chartreuse grub on it. I usually use some brand x stuff. Light is the answer for the best motion. It's harder to throw distance and so stealth is critical. Bass (two more almost as big), pickerel (2 each about 24") and crappie (only three) were all caught inside the weed line, and yellows were caught outside as well as inside the weed line. They make the best ceviche. Everything was caught on the little jigs. They catch everything except trout, so when I'm fishing multispecies, that's what I use; I get dinner and a few nice big surprises. I haven't eaten bass in years.

What I want to know more about is how to get the whites regularly. One October years ago, I was rowing across New Croton and saw a school of fish suspended in the middle of 80 feet of water. I had a little Kastmaster and dropped it down and proceeded to  jig up a ton of big whites. I haven't repeated it but now I'm usually togging in the Sound in my canoe in October. I get some through the ice in Sodom but I can't say I know how to target them. Any info on this species is appreciated.

I think I've got the hang of it now! And here's a crappie from the same place a week before, on the same jig.

I've heard stories of them being there. I've seen them caught at the 100 bridge on Croton and I've caught them by the 35 Bridge on Muscoot, so it would make sense that they would be there.

Thanks they don't seem to be big enough to get with sawbellys. Might wit a fly rod but they seem to stay too far away from the boat for fly casting ! Ive had a lot of luck for big bass and monster perch with 6 ft bomber style plugs on windy days.I caught and released 3   3 1/2 to 4 1/2 bass early today on 6ft and 12 ft bombers around the point dropoffs !
