Kensico on Aug 22
« on: August 24, 2009, 04:08:36 PM »
Saturday was overcast and gloomy early in the morning, but what the heck! Went to Wade's, picked up some shiners and headed out on the Rye side deep waters. A slow troll in 120 feet of water yielded one furious strike at depth, and a 5.5 pound native laker was boated. And then it started raining.....and I was home by 8.15am. the weather is killing us this Season.

5 and a half pounds is a decent catch!

Good job!

Sounds like the lakers are at the bottom finally.

Good job! A 5 and a half is a pretty strong fish. I'm also impressed you
got him in the early hours.

Guess that 24 beats the 23lb 13oz record of 2007.

>Anyone, how about from shore?

Hard to say since most records dont state shore or boat.
But I know that the 2007 record was boat and I'm guessing the 24 is too.
I've personally caught two 6lb plus Lakers from shore and every year someone
lands something bigger like a 7 or 8.

The most famous lake trout fishery is Great Bear lake in Canada. The current world record was caught here. 72lb.(rod and reel) The previous record came from here also. There is a great book called " Lake Trout " that came out a few years ago. Everyone who fishes for lakers should read it.

i was going to purchase that book a while back, but a review on amazon said it was more about a story then about biology and facts.

Nice fish! Can hardly wait until winter, perhaps I can land something like that from shore.
Congrats!

My largest Laker
« Reply #13 on: August 28, 2009, 02:28:08 PM »
It was in June in 2007, and I caught a laker that weighed in at 10 pounds on the button. Caught the fish in the depest spot on a soft rubber shad lure, on 6 pound line. It took 15 minutes to land him, and it felt like 2 hours. We had him for Christmas Eve dinner and he fed 20 people with leftovers. Seeing him belly-down, head on, on a huge platter freaked out some of the guests! He was a native too, all his fins intact. And he had some serious teeth. He's the biggest by far, and I've not exceeded 6 pounds since then.
