Kensico 4/21
« on: April 24, 2007, 11:25:54 AM »
Went out from 11am-til 8:30pm.  There were lots of people around, but it seemed like all were catching fish.  Watched one guy pick up three in 15min. from a boat, looked like he was jigging.  I got one nice brown, 3.6lbs, on a big minnow on bottom, maybe 40ft.

Only more fish could have made it a better day.

Any body have the new address to Wade's?  Forgot they moved, had to go all the way to rt 35 for bait.

Also there were a ton of bugs in the air Saturday, it must have been an awsome hatch.  They were everywhere.  Didn't seem like the fish noticed them until it was time to go, then I saw several fish break water, maybe eating all those bugs.

I stoped at Wade's yeaterday around 10 am to get some live bait and they were closed, but there was no open hours sign on the door.  Are they closed on Wednesdays?
I still was able to get a 21 inch Laker by trolling deep, around 100 feet.

Tom,
I should be through there this weekend, I'll ask about store hours.
If you don't mind sharing, what lures are you trolling with?

Welcome again to all the fresh new blood here. Sorry but I'm bogged down with a weekend Masters class for a few more weeks.

Wade's is closed on Wednesday's, otherwise he's a great guy to deal with. I get a lot of tips from him.

Did anyone see or here about the 26 lb laker that was brought to Wade's last Saturday from Kensico. My friend from work called me on my cell just to make me jealous. Also, I think he was a little shocked by seeing it. It was caught deep, not far from the bridge, with a sawbellie from what he heard.

My buddy Rodney caught 2 nice browns up in the north end by Nannahagen road (Area 2) from shore on shiners. Seems like the trout are all over the place.

Best to All,
Vinny

I caught two Lakers so far using 4 to 5 inch flutter spoons that are silver plated with blue & yellow skirts.  Both Lakers were around 21 inches long. I troll deep at 100' plus. This is difficult to do with leaded line because of the lost lures when you troll and the reservoir depth changes. This is usually my summer trolling strategy but it seems to be working in this crazy spring.  I did notice many bait fish on the surface or slightly below in Rye Lake and this may bring the Lakers up to the surface.  Surface temperatures are around 46 degrees on Kensico. Last spring I got a 24 incher on the surface in 50 degree water. Good Luck.

I went out on Saturday and sunday and monday after work on Kensico at Rye. 2 bites only. Was in about 90 foot of water, but it seemed deasd. Maybe water is too cold, but other seems to be catching fish. suspect that live bait works best early in the season.

Hello All, Great site, Just was wondering where on the Kensico you can fish from shore. Gotta boat on the Amawalk but havent had much luck there in a while since they completed the work on the spillway

Jim,
Welcome to the forums, it's just starting to pickup around here.

I started a couple of years ago by shore fishing at Kensico. There are a bunch of spots, some more popular than others.

  • Some people park by the Rye Bridge on Route 22 and find spots below the bridge or to the east side.
  • I used to park on Route 22 just south of the bridge on the west side (southbound) of the road. There's a strip of dirt shoulder to pull over. Then you walk up and over a hump to get to a rocky shore area. That spot looks out toward the backside of the Kensico Dam.
  • A friend of mine just caught 2 browns using shiners by shore fishing in the north west arm by Nannyhagen Road. That's considered Area 2. There's parking on Route 120 near Nannyhagen Rd.
  • I see guys on the rocks in the north east arm known as Area 3. That's right around where Route 22 and Route 120 merge.

That's it off the top of my head. I'll bet there are some more spots to be had.

Best Always,
Vinny

You can also fish from shore on Rye Lake. Go to the end of Lake Street coming from White Plains, and look for a pump house on the north side of the road, just before the boat docking area.  You can park in from of the pump house and then follow the shore westerly, for 1/4 mile,  until you reach a rocky point.  If you cast off from the point you are in 65 feet of water. I would use live bait and let them float or weight them down to the bottom. After taking out my boat several times in this awful wind, shore fishing is getting more and more attractive. Good Luck, Tom :)

I see people on the Rye bank all the time but have yet to see any of them catch anything. But you are dead right about getting out of the wind!

May I ask a few of you very experienced fishermen to describe the "perfect" rig--in your opinion--for shiners? Line weight, rod length, and configuration of the bait....here's your chance to shine! (Pun intended)

OnKensico, this has to be "the" weekend.....mild temsp, light breezes, nothing to make the days tough for the fishermen....maybe we can see some deeper water action now the waters are warming....
