WACKY RIGGING?????
« on: November 23, 2006, 09:36:08 PM »
Is anyone familiar with the wacky rig?  I have been thinking of giving it a try but I don't know too much about it.  What type and size hook should be used???  What is the best time of year to use it????  Where is the best place to use it????  How is it presented, do you give it any twitches to try to get some action on it???
Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Dom,
Wacky rigging a worm is basically slipping an O-ring over a senko type worm, centering it, then using anywhere from a #1 and up octupus hook. Some guys use EWG hooks (extra wide gap). I think it's just a matter of personal preference.

One thing that I learned about and has been going around the NYBASS circles is the use of Bill M's Wacky Rigging Tool. It's a brass tube that simply helps you rig your worm consistently in the right spot and a little less messy. Your senko type worm tends to last longer also with the right O-ring and setup. Check his site out at http://www.wackytool.com

I've been out with a few different veteran fishermen and they pulled out their wacky rigged worm and caught fish all day. It's one of many ways to hook the big ones.

Best to All,
Vinny

Where do you get the o-rings?  I never really see them in on line tackle stores I use.

I too fish wacky rigged senkos without an O-Ring. Not much to it, flip it to a likely spot, let it sink. If they dont hit it on the way down, slowly lift the rod tip and shake the rod. Try this alongside the boat first to get an idea of what different lifts and shakes do to the worm. Also, no need to keep the line tight to feel hits. When they grab it, they go! I use circle hooks so there is no hookset, in fact, just lifting the rod usuallly does the job since they most often hit on the drop. But if you see the line race out, wait for about 3 seconds, then lift the tip firmly, but dont slam it like you would a texas rig, the hook is exposed and not designed for that type of hookset. Good luck!

For those who don't use O-rings, do you put the hook right through the worm?   If you do, does this weaken the worm?  I would think that the worm could easily tear if you go thorugh it sideways like that, no?  Wouldn't it be hard to keep the worm on the hook?

Dominic,
The o-rings will help the senko last longer. When a fish hits, the hook tends to pull away from the senko leaving it hanging up the line away from the hook. Without the o-ring the worm will have to pull or tear near the hook and senko.
There's always an element of coincidence on how the fish hits but I've seen the o-rings save a lot of worms to be used again.

Best Always,
Vinny

Thanks Bill M,
I will email you.  I just picked up the Wackytool from the Hookerz table from a seminar I attended over the weekend.  There were plenty of rings that came with the tool.  I will definitly take you up on your offer just so I got an abundant supply.  Thanks for the offer and I will be in touch soon.
