Like Bluefish, I plan to get out in a month or so and clean up around my boat areas, if anyone does organize a more formal cleanup, I'd be happy to participate. These reservoirs are a great resource, it's sad to see how some people treat them.

Amen!  I've been planning on doing that.  I'm going to bring some garbage bags with when I go out from now on.

If you guys are planning a clean-up, make sure that you let DEP and DEC know about it.  These folks need to know that A) the place is a filthy mess, and B) that anglers are the ones that are the stewards of the land and property.  I believe this will help in ensuring ongoing access for anglers.

DEP has cut their staffing of organized events if you try to involve them.  Have first hand knowledge of this.

You can let them know to see if they will arrange a central drop site to collect any garbage that is picked up.  Otherwise it's on you to dispose of anything collected.

DEC has no part in this kind of thing.

I completely agree with Montrose.   I doubt DEP would want any involvement in this.

I have always viewed these reservoirs as almost a private fishing club    -    considering the number of reservoirs in West/Putnam, and the relative number of people who fish them.    Kensico is huge, and on the busiest day in the Summer you might see 20 boats?    So, I see it as almost cleaning up my portion of a private lake.      The DEP's rules vis-a-vis needing permits seem to serve the purpose of keeping many more people away.

I think if a handful of guys  -  on their own schedule   -    picked some afternoon to clean where their boat is placed, it could go a long way.    On this website alone most of the reservoirs are covered, in many different boat "areas".

I figure to get out in a week or so.

Bluefish, it's not that they don't want any involvlement, just no money to pay staff to assist.

In the past they had organized events themselves and would recruit locals who would help.  Usually weekend days.  Now not even a weekday.

As far as I understand, some of the former employees retired and now, the DEP might supply bags and allow a drop off at their office properties, but that's about it.  And that stuff needs to be ironed out and approved first.  It can be done, just a lot of red tape.

Large scale clean ups are tough, but bringing a bag everytime we go and picking up some of the litter on the way in and out still goes a long way.

Yeah, that's what I meant.    With all the other stuff they have, and financial constraints, it'd be a lot to expect.

I know some fishermen view the DEP as some pain-in-the-butt, but I have always had the opposite feeling.   The restrictions placed on fishing these reservoirs by the DEP are the very reason the fishing is so good.
