Kensico Jan 28 2012
« on: January 28, 2012, 02:29:53 PM »
Finally got a chance to go out on a boat since Jan 9th. Got to Area 8 and the boat area smelled like skunk. This warm weather is affecting everything. Next joyful moment was seeing that the water level was even further down than before. There were three boats working the bridge area,
bait and jigging for Lakers. Had my trolling lines out by 9:30am was reading 37.3F on
the surface. Fish were very sparse and worked my way to Rye Lake. Ran into ChrisM coming up the
other way. Finally started getting some good readings but ended up landing a 26 inch Laker at 5 colors on a crank. Then another Laker at 4 colors on a sutton. Rowed back, had two fish pose for the photo and released in good condition. On land by 1130, nice excercise, felt more like March than January.

Nice job Ken...how was the wind? Forecast was for winds 5 to 10  with gust to 15mph?

Thanks Erik. It was practically windless at 9:30 and there were very little gusts even at 11:30.
What there was couldn't have been more than 3-4 mph at most.

Manny, thanks. That 26 incher was most likely 6lbs and change. But I just couldn't be bothered
to drive up to Katonah just to weigh it. And then it would be dead and I'd have to clean it.
Now I'm wondering why I even entered the derby. LOL

Congrats, Ken!  Good work getting out there.  Sounds like the rowing kept you warm and the fish kept it interesting.  Perfect.  Nice and sunny out there this morning?

Nice work Ken! Good seeing you today, guess I should have followed you on to Rye Lake.  :) I turned around and tried jigging around the bridge but didn't get any hits. No action with LC for me anywhere either. Oh well, can't complain about getting out on a day like this in late January...

I smelled that skunk too, very strong around the bridge area.

Yes, it did smell like skunk but it didn't mean we got skunked today!

Ken, surprisingly I somehow missed you today although we were fishing out of the same boat area.  My friend and I were one of the boats fishing shiners in the channel near the bridge.  Than you went to the Rey side and we staid on the big K.

The day was gorgeous and it pleasantly surprised me with good fishing too.  In fact for me it was kinda upside down in terms of where I caught what.   First 26" laker was business as usual - down at 70+' on shiner, but than came 22" brown from the same depth!  I thought it was another good laker but when I saw it, I was stunned!  It fought like hell and tangled all my other lines before I manged it in the boat.  But than the victory was even more glorious!
The last 25" laker came on LC at 2 colors in the middle of big K - just where I would expect browns to be.  This was no surprise though.
Sadly (but not regretfully) I lost the bigger laker right off my stringer while trying to show off in front of couple of "less fortunate" fisherman.  I lifted all three out of the water and suddenly  there were two... :(
The best thing I learned today was that big lakers are back - these were my first keepers since November.  It definitely fills more like March.

Hey Ken, I thought that was you In the channel, we had a brief chat over by the Rye lake side. The lakers were definitely on the bite today, landed 6 between 21 & 25" all on Flatfish btwn. 2 1/2" & 7 colors. Tried some flat lining cranks in shallower water for browns without any luck (did miss a hook up though). Good job Ark on the brownie.

Thanks Brad. Actually the sky was a bit touch and go and mostly cloudy early on but
turned sunny later. Which, in winter, I find turns the "bite" on

Ark- Congratulations! I have never heard of a Brown comming up from 70ft but
now I know that it can happen. And I agree, I have never caught anything BUT Browns
on 2 colors in the middle of Big K! But I have lost big fish from a stringer as well, so THAT
I can identify with. Unfortunately.

ChrisM, could you see my WF decal?

ChrisD, pleasure to meet you today. Yes, the Lakers were on a roll today.
In truth I find it much easier to target Browns when the Lakers are deeper,
not hitting at 2-3 colors.

Yeah, I saw it pretty clearly from a distance. Mine was on the other side, maybe I should get a second one. Great way to recognize other members on the water.

Congrats to everyone today. Sounds like I'm the only one who got skunked trolling LC. Maybe I was rowing too fast :-\

Hey Guys, Just to add....  i also got out on the rye lake side today, from 9:00-2:00.  It was beautiful early on, then the winds picked up a bit.  I landed one laker, about 20 inches, while reeling in a crank bait that I was trolling about at least 50 yards behind the boat.  Im still trying to get the trolling technique down, I seem to catch most of my fish when retrieving my lures.

On another note, it seems like somebody placed two 14ft semi v's right in front of the only launch at area 12 (rye lake).  Does anyone seem to know why these are here, both boats appear to be exactly the same make, niether has a permit, and both have an "A' written in marker??  I would assume that they will have to be moved at some point to allow other boats to  launch.
