Weird Meeting
« on: January 26, 2012, 11:51:55 PM »
The other day I went to get some buffalo wings at a bar near my warehouse ( they make great wings & burgers) . I don't visit this bar a lot, I mostly go there to pick up wings when I or my girl get that craving. Anyway when I was there a guy said hello to me and called me by my name and I asked him how he knew who I was? His reply was he reads my post on Westchester Fishing forum and he recognized me when I walked in. So naturally I asked him what his member name was and he told me he was not a member. ( at this point I was a little bugged out and it felt really weird) I then told him he should join and become a member and he said he just likes to read the post and doesn't have much to post himself so there was no reason to join. I personally think that sucks that he wouldn't join! I did feel a weird about the situation at the end though. Anything like this ever happen to any of you guys?

Yes that has happened to me but at the boat areas. They know my name, I ask how
thy knew and they say the website, and when I as what their member name is I'm told
they aren't members. At least it's at a fishing location and they are obviously fishermen
and I always talk to fishermen I meet if they want anyway. But if it happened anywhere else It would definitely feel weird.

Just another "pro" reason to have membership be required to view and post IMO.  Like I've said before, it's free anyway.

I applaud Vinny's efforts w/ this site and understand his reasoning to keep it open to the public, but a meeting like that can definitely give you the creeps.

I agree with you..let's say 10$ a year for membership? That's a couple of cups of coffee..there are people definitely free-riding us on info..

I just wonder from a safety reason, a lot of information is posted, and like I mentioned in another post, its all google-able..  For the safety of our members and our waters, there should be some sort of governance on what information makes it out onto the worldwide web.

Wow, fishing stalkers.

I would start to get nervous if you walk into your apartment, and someone has left a dead rabbit (or laker?) in a boiling pot on the stove.  ;)

I don't see the big deal.  Non members can't see pics.  That is an incentive to join.  Many people join and don't post.  Lots of us post but don't report fish caught or burn spots.  This is the internet.  If you post your pic you have to figure someone will see it.

I've met guys at the water or in the bait shop and it's cool when they are members.  I've also met guys who occasionally look at the board but aren't members.  Usually they are nice too.  Just try to think of then as not members yet.  I read the posts for a week or two before I was compelled to speak and then I joined.

Post info carefully and save sensitive stuff for pm.  Remember some like to show off their catch but post disinformation by reporting incorrect locations.

What makes the sites really good is when you get lots of participation and diverse views.  I think a little freeloading is the price.

I don't see the big deal.  NON MEMBERS CANT SEE PIC'S.
That just made it more weird for me! If they can't see pic's then how did he know who I was? Unless he was a member and just didn't want to tell me! :o

I know that nonmembers can not see any photos put up in the forums.
But I don't know if that holds true for the pictures under our names to the
left. Anyone know?
