5-8lb LM Bass
« on: January 20, 2012, 10:45:35 AM »
So the last 2 weekends, I hunted with one of my brother's good friends. We talked about fishing, reservoirs, etc.  He told me about some LM bass that were caught this past summer by him and his friends, etc. and that they caught some weighing as big as 5-8lbs.  Naturally, I was a bit skeptical......until he showed me some pics.  These bass looked every bit of 5+lbs, and 1 pic of a bass that supposedly weighed 8lb 4oz, looked bigger than that honestly.  This 8lb+ beast was released after numerous photos.  The lake resides in Putnam County, and is private I believe for the most part.  My perception of this lake was always that it is very dirty, weedy, etc. I would never eat anything out of this place.  Anyway, as a kid I did catch some nice LM Bass from this lake from shore, so its possible with a boat and trolling motor that other parts of this lake hold some big daddy's!

I will definitely be taking this guy up on his offer to fish this lake this summer and see for myself!

I was also shocked to hear that this lake has Smallies, White Perch, and Crappies.  He said they catch 2lb+ crappies regularly. I can't wait to try this place out.

Sounds like the right place to be casting 10.5oz $600 swimbaits.  ;)

Based on the fish size, yes.  But would you throw that big of an asset into water full of weeds?  One hard snag and you'd be sending in a diving team!   ;)

lol, I dont even think I own a swimbait. The guy I talked to said he only fishes with artificials...topwater, plastics, etc........I will try live shiners or cut sunnies.

Biz - Without naming the lake, would this lake be one of the numerous lake communities in Putnam like Secor, McGregor, Lake Peekskill?

I haven't  fished some of these and others since I was a kid and there were some monster bass in them.  Not sure I knew what a crappie was when I was kid but also remember catching pickerel and catfish.

I've never fished any of those 3 lakes.  More like a Kirk Lake or Lake Mahopac, where I believe the only way on is from somebody's property.

Thats pretty damn close to the NYS record!  Was it officially weighed? do you have any pics, etc.?
