Morning on the Lake
« on: April 19, 2008, 01:56:23 pm »

Tried to get myself to the lake by sunrise...didn't make it.

Arrived late at bout 6:30. Sun was up but not on the water, just brushing against the tree line.

Saw lots of largemouth bass and large schools of juvenile bluegill very tight to the shoreline.
Probably about ten or so bass in the 12 -16 " range.  I fished the senko worms most of the
morning, and sight casted to some of the bass.  They would follow...nose the bait....
then just stare.  I think they were staring at me....so i gave up on  them and started
targeting the deeper water.

Saw a few flashes that may have been crappie, then I hooked up on this chain pickerel.

The minute the sun hit the water, the largemouth were gone.
Probably went looking for a shady spot.

I continued my quest and it paid off with this nice little puller.  It was much feistier
than I expected this time of the year.  It jumped a few times before it subdued for the grab.

I threw a crankbait for casting practice, then jammed the senkos back on.

A few casts later I was rewarded with  a little gem that has been missing from my list.
I caught my first small mouth, and I was pleased.  It was a pretty decent fight and it put
on a cool show.  I thought for sure it was gonna throw the hook at the waters edge, but  I
somehow managed to land it even though it was still pretty wild.

The bite seemed to shut down and the wind had picked up, so I started throwing
a 3/4 oz Kastmaster for the depth and the range.  I figured with all the bluegills that
this size may produce. It wasn't to be but I did enjoy getting in some long casts.

The reptiles were out and active today.  Saw a nice 3' water snake and a turtle
swimming around.  What an awesome morning!

Absolutely beautiful!

Which lake were you on?

I spent the morning slinging flies at Amawalk Outlet, but could not get the trout interested today. I may go back in the evening.

Thanks.  I got lucky.  I am pretty stoked about the small mouth.
