GAS AUGERS
« on: January 08, 2012, 08:59:02 am »
Greetings to all,
I have enjoyed this site for sometime now and finally decided to join and post.

I live on the Putnam Westchester border and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on a good Ice Fishing spot that allowed Gas Augers ?

I know The DEP does not allow them and when checking around its been difficult to get  suggestions.
Any clue if Mohansic allows ?  ..........very itchy to use my Jiffy and save my arms from the manual auger this year.

Thanks

Crawler, welcome aboard!  The closest lake I can think of at the moment that allows power augers is Lake Oscawana in Putnam Valley.  Good Luck!

Other than Oskawana, you have Mohegan and Mahopac too. If you don't have permission on these you may get your balls broken.
Take a kid fishing. If there are no kids around or they don't wanna go, take me!

Looking for any regulations against "Gas" augers on the reservoirs, the DEC page about ice fishing mentions their use but nothing prohibiting them. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/7733.html

As usual, I'm no expert so I'll continue the search for an exact answer.

Thanks,
Vinny

Vinny, it's more jursidictional than the DEC site.  DEC doesn't prohibit their use, but other laws might.

For instance, on the NYC rezs, the operation of any motorized equipment is prohibited, including gas augers.

On other lakes and ponds that do not allow gas motors on boats, the same reg is in place for gas augers since it's still a gas motor.  These can be state regs or municipalities codes and ordinances too.

I learned the hard way about a year ago, "NO GAS MOTOR" means no gas anything. Back in the day it wasnt an issue provided you placed it in your sled or brought it ashore when done making holes.

Noise also seems to piss off the locals ..... I can understand that, especially on a Sunday morn.

Anybody interested in developing a solar auger ? Let me know.
Theres always Greenwood Lake ( just a bit of a hike )

Thanks again

Unfortunately, the key word in the rules is no motorized, electric of gas powered.
