Many people refer to cotton as cotton = killer, in the winter.  You sweat or get cotton wet and have it against your skin and thats how you get hypothermia and/or frostbite.  You definitely want Under Armour or Silk underwear leggings and top as your base layer.  Same goes for socks, so some sort of base layer sock, I again use Under Armour, then definitely a wool sock as your 2nd pair on top.  When your walking through the woods, rowing your boat, etc. You will sweat, but you dont want the moisture against your skin all day.  UA base layers wick it away from your skin.

Like anything else, you get what you pay for.  Im biased to UA because for $100 total ($50 for leggings + $50 for top) I have zero complaints in temps down to 0 degrees.  I honestly hate the cold, but with decent boots and outer layers, as long as I have UA Base 2.0 as my base layer I can sit 8-10 hours in temps below freezing without any issues.

Depending on the temps/winds/etc....I wear a full mask or just a dickey. I always wear a tight beanie with a heavier one over it.

Last but not least, hand warmers. They are so cheap and last for 8+ hours, I keep them inside my gloves against my bare skin. Anytime my fingers get cold, I just make a fist and feel the heat.

Yea definitely no cotton, once your feet sweat your done.

Hand warmers, I usually start on the car ride to where Im going, they take 10-15 minutes to get going, after shaking, etc.  Then they definitely last me 6-8 hours without a doubt.  If I remember correctly, Bob's Bait sells them.

I just got moved to Rye for work. I'm right off 95 at Playland Pkwy. Any place nearby to wet a line for a bit after work?

Hey Newbee1, not really the place to post that question, but if you are close to Playland Pkwy, there's always Playland itself, there's a pier there for saltwater species.  In the summer time, there's plenty of Blues, and Stripers.  During the Fall, there's Porgy and Blackfish by the jetty as well.  Good luck.

Biz,

For socks would you suggest the following under armour, would you use a pair of wool socks over these?

You want ColdGear socks.....not heatgear. Heatgear is for really hot temps...

I wear the Barker's as my first layer sock, then a wool sock.

I stopped by the outlets in Clinton CT this weekend, I picked up a pair of boots from Bass, they are comfortable as hell, just hope they will keep me warm, they have some sort of fleece lining that seems like it should do the job.  They had all types of winter boots on sale, I got mine for $170 + 50% + 15% +10% = $35.00 :o
