Hawks, Eagles, and Birds
« on: December 02, 2011, 06:42:23 pm »
I believe this is a hawk. It was an Awesome sight outside my office in the Bronx so we took pic's. It had killed some sort of Rodent but I couldn't tell which kind. Maybe a Rat. Anyone know what kind of Bird this one is exactly?

Looks like a Redtailed Hawk.
I get them in my backyard all the time.
Very nice photos!

Yes, its a red tail. Lots of them once you leave the concrete jungle!
Take a kid fishing. If there are no kids around or they don't wanna go, take me!

Those are great pics, and it is definitely a redtail hawk.

I have been trying for years to get close up shots of the hawks and ospreys on Kensico, but can never get close enough to get a good shot.

I saw an osprey swoop down and get a fish on the Rye side of the Rt. 22 bridge last year, but I wasn't quick enough to get a photo.

What camera and lens was this captured on?

The prey does not look like a ray to me. It looks more like a small rabbit.

Not to many rabbits in the BX so maybe someones pet got swooped away! My Dads Camera (not sure model) I will check the model out on Monday.

Hawks also feed on squirrels which are relatively common everywhere.
I've had them take squirrels from under my birdfeeder. Oh they attack
the Mourning Doves as well.

Wow, Monk parakeets (aka quaker parakeets) are in NY? I'm pretty certain the DEC Hunting regulations books says you can shoot them all the time as an invasive species. They've been in Edgewater NJ since the 1970s and there are
some people trying to protect them. Maybe I'll start a club to protect the snakehead... ;D

Last year I was standing outside my house, and it seemed like it was gently raining feathers.   I didn't pay much mind, but it continued.   I looked up, and a hawk was on a branch 50 feet above me, "plucking" a mourning dove.    I guess they eat whatever meat they can catch.
