One more question, what size of the auger you recommend here?

Eggshells is an oldtimer trick. More of a visual attractant. Bellies may work too

when they're alive they have more of a goldish color, and about rainbows loving corn, ive seen corn in streams while i was fishing, thought they were gold pieces from a distance. ive only caught roachfish in one lake in my life.

Regarding auger size, it's a trade off. A big auger is nice but you're cutting a lot more ice (remember, the area of a circle is proportional to the square of the radius so the difference in energy spent between cutting a 4" hole and an 8"hole is not a factor of 2 but 8). You can see some monster lakers come through little holes on Youtube, but I've lost more big fish at little holes than at big ones. Gaffing is easier and if a hook comes out or the line breaks right at the hole. you'll have a second or two where you know it bit the fish hasn't figured it out yet.

If you invest in an 8" Nils auger, you will never need another! This 8" auger cuts cleaner and with less effort than any 6" auger. I am actually safe to say that it takes more effort to start a gas auger and drill 5 holes than it does to drill twice as many holes woth an 8" nils hand auger. Twice the cost of a lazer but worth every penny! Either way, i would never fish with less than an 8" auger.
