3 Rainbows on Thanksgiving day
« on: November 25, 2011, 08:05:07 pm »
It was such a nice day that my wife and I decided to do some fishing late in the morning. We went to a small lake in central Westchester because my wife usually does well with the sunfish and I had some luck with the trout last year in October and November. Well, we caught 3 Rainbow trout on worms.  They were all about 14 or 15 inches and  they were all safely released.

Great report! What pound test did you catch them on?

It is more of a pond than a lake. I don't know the name but it is on Lake Rd. in Pleasantville. I use 10 lb. test for all my rods.  In Kensico 10 lb test line works well for the Lakers and bass.

Wow, now you've piqued my interest.    Are you talking about the pond on Lake Street in Pleasantville (the one right next to the pool)?    If so, they must've had a derby there, recently, because not to many coldwater fish could live long in that body of water.

You ever catch any there? I have only caught crappies and sunnies there, and seen copperheads.

Yes, it is the pond next to the pool in Pleasantville. I actually caught one today at dusk it was about 15".  In the summer they must go up that small river that feeds into the pond, because I have only caught them in Octobeer and November. Ther are also plenty of sunfish and LMB in there.

I believe that's Nannahagen park by lake st.?? I have fished there this summer but I have only managed to hook 2 lmb! I would give it a try again if there's trout in there.

That actually blows me away, and I am absolutely, 100% convinced that these fish must've been stocked earlier for a derby (hey, who cares how they got there?)    The pond itself is locally referred to as "Lake Street" and I haven't put a line in there in 40 years.    Who knew that there were 'bows in this thing.   The pond has a real silt problem, and the deepest part in the center is 6 or 7 feet, tops (maybe 10 near the spillway).    A few years (15 or so) back, I think they dredged the pond, but it is a losing battle.   Its shallow nature makes it a great ice skating lake  -   it freezes very quickly.
Very surprising.

Just a note, that the DEC regulations state;
"A person may not fish for a species (not even catch and release) during the closed season for that species on a given water."
And the season for trout runs April 1st through Oct 15th, except in waters
with special regulations.
So if I am interpreting this correctly, a bobber and worm might pass but I doubt a Mepps on 6lb line would.

Definitely derby fish.  I assist with a few other kids tourneys locally each year and I used to go to that one at Nannyhagen when I was younger to catch the stocked trout.

lol the pond is really shallow. It's crazy if there's a 15 inch trout in there..
