Roman, I to want to say thanks. I am not a big bass guy, but everything you put up makes a lot of sense based on how many bass I catch in the winter through the ice.  Many times the largest of the season and many more than we are expected to think.

Interesting about the plankton too.  Especially locally.  I know I have read a lot about shad die offs in the winter for southern rezs, but obviously, the alewives can stand cooler temps and they need to feed all year too.

sptsman,

I don't know anyone selling one, but here's a link to the Vexilar factory outlet.  They sell used units for a discount that have been refurbished at the factory.  I bought a refurbished unit 3 years ago and have had zero problems.  It's a good way to get into the ice sonar w/o breaking the bank.  Plus you can get a warranty and not worry about buying a unit second hand that could quit on you.  Something to think about anyway.  Good luck.

Thanks Montrose. I will look into that. I used to have a Zercom and was very happy with it. Used  it on my boat at Papacton Res until I flipped my boat 2 years ago and everything is now 160ft down.

We almost flipped at CR.  Buddy didn't realized his body was no longer that of a teenager, and started casting standing up.  He almost fell off the boat when he tripped over his feet trying to regain his balance from a strong cast.  It probably would have been better had he fell off cleanly, but he didn't.  Instead, he landed on the side of the boat, and almost flipped it with 2 others with him.  The boat took on about 2 feet of water before I was able to counter-balance the boat.  If this happened at Kensico with it's strong winds, we would have taken on more water and eventually sank.

Wow that sounds painful..in the summer?? Now in the winter try not to stand up..falling can be fatal...

CS5, just an FYI, sadly NC is no longer on the list of NYC lakes that ice fishing is permitted on.  Muscoot and other are though, so check the regs and give it another go this winter.

I sounds like there is enough interest for veterans and newbies alike to try to get an informal local get together off the ground.  As the water locks up I'm sure something will transpire.

Manny,

You need 5 tip ups and at least one jigging rod. I have an old flasher that you can use. Warm boots and clothes is a must also. I also have an extra auger for you to use. If that soon to be married ass budget will not allow tip ups or jigging rods, I have plenty of those also. Minimal monetary investment. Maximum effort!!! I've been ice fishing for 30+ plus years and have tons of crap that is perfectly usable!

Hi Manny, I also have quadruple of anything and everything for the ice so between Frank and I we will have you totally set up! Only thing you need to worry about are a good pair of pack boots and either an ice suit or some Carhart bibs and jacket. Got some extra of that too, LOL!
