I use the Humminbird 160. It is a reasonably priced, accurate, sturdy, reliable, and long battery life unit. ;)

Hey men, Like everything else I buy Ive read up on it as much as I could.
A couple of questions, Where I fish ( New Croton) its super weedy. Does this unit do a good job in the weeds?

When you use it, how do you use.? leave it on, and cast where the fish are?
I know it might sound stupid, but.....
Thanx,
CS

CS yes you leave it on. This unit doesn't neccisarily tell you where the fish are. It tells you depth and the depth of the fish along with structure and some weeds as well. This unit give you temp. You really don't need much more but if you are looking for more details I assume you need to spend more money.

Thanx for getting back so soon, What about.. as the screen scrolls  through,  how wide is that compared to real life. Like is it a 20 feet wide distance? Does it matter the way your boat is facing?

biggamee, as Ken noted the flasher is realtime and once you getthe hang of it, is much more reliable than LCD.  I can run my vex for about 24-30 hours w/o a recharge, but tend to just charge it each time I return home anyway.

I icefished for a long time w/o the flasher and I caught fish.  I prefer panfishing over trout jigging, but do both.  Now that I have the flasher I cannot even imagine going ice fishing without it, it's that addicting.  The best aspects to having a flasher (for me anyway) are 1. drilling a hole and dropping the trnasducer down to see if fish are below you and 2. being able to watch the reaction of the fish as they come up to the bait allowing you to make adjustments to catch them immediately (bigger, smaller, faster, slower, etc.).

You should do your homework about what unit you want and consider what you target most.  I bought a refurbished Vex directly from them.  Marcum and Lowrance also make good units, but you'll find that it gets to be a Chevy/Ford/Dodge thing if you start asking for opinions.  Check out a few and see what you like.

Well I used it for my FF for the first time today. I went to my usually place an learned it dropped off to 50 feet only 25ft from shore. The on my piranhamax 160. I saw fish all over the screen at 45 - 40 feet. I tried to get down there by jigging for over an hour, no luck.  Could not believe how many fish were on the ff.  Now I got to figure out how to catch these guys in cold water.
