Muscoot Oct 2
« on: October 02, 2011, 12:48:35 pm »
Went up to Muscoot do put on a boat tag.
Figured I'd pick up some shiners and go for perch
for 2 hours or so as I got there like 8:30am.
I must be the world's crappiest panfisherman because
I couldn't catch one single perch Yellow or White.
Instead caught 2 little largemouths and one 17 inch Brown.
The colors and body shape of this Brown looked more like a stream fish than the fat silver slobs I'm more use to Plus it had a sklightly forked tail which I
don't see too often.  Released to go put on some more weight.

Ken,
That's not such a bad trip.I would have trolled bread and butter..and patroled the lake looking for points to return to with bait..that Brown has a lot of weight to gain to hit any decent weight..maybe he will start feeding on the forage the lake has to offer..

Thanks Erik, There's definitely forage cause I saw a few sawbelly schools on the surface, Back when I used to fish Muscoot in the 80s there really were very few trout in there as the DEC wasn't stocking it. I don't know how long Muscoot has been getting trout stockings but I suppose there must be some good sized holdovers, Findloing them couyd be a tough task faced with a max 30-32ft reservoir with plenty of weed growth.

Ken,
Is it possible that it is a Brook Trout?

I recently caught a few small Brook trout in a local stream and they do resemble Browns.

I think a Brook trout looks more like a Laker..could that be a Brown/Brook cross?..but it looks like a Brown but there's something weird about its head..looks different..possibly a native Brown?..17 inch Browns from Cross River are usaully like little fat footballs

A brown/brook cross is a Tiger Trout.  That is not a tiger trout. I think it's brown trout from a stream, with the small mouth, etc.

Tom, I don't think it's a brook or a brook hybrid.
It's clearly a Brown but with more stream fish colors than a reservoir brown as Biz says. And I agree with Erik that browns even this size from Cross River are the usual silver fatties.

It looks like the native browns that I have caught in local streams. Doesn't look like a stockie to me Ken. Nice job!
Take a kid fishing. If there are no kids around or they don't wanna go, take me!

Ken, did you notice if that brown had lots of red spots besides the black spots? I read somewhere that the native wild browns are more likely to have those additional red spots.

John,
Yes it had much more red spots than the Browns I normally catch.

Nice catch, Ken. Looks much like those I caught and saw in Titicus outlet. Which area did you fish? Was it close to some streams flowing into the reservoir?
