Hello Everybody
« on: March 27, 2008, 08:26:29 pm »
Figured this would be the best place for this.  Anyhow, names Jay, been living in the Mt. Pleasant area all my life but haven't been that gung ho about fishing.  My interests switched from computers to the great outdoors about a year ago.  Hunting, shooting, hiking, and generally just being outside took the place of my Computers and my video-games.

Anyhow, I printed out the DEP car tag and permit, visited Mt. Pleasant town hall on my lunch break from work and grabbed myself a fishing license, took a drive and found Wades (3 minutes from my job) and I'm pretty much all set if I can find my rod, reel and tacklebox.  When I was a kid I used to go fishing about once a year, when the Leith's Pond fishing derby would come up.  4 years in a row I managed to win biggest fish and most fish so I guess I was doing something right.  But when the age limit caught up to me I just kinda stopped fishing.  I would go with my grandfather to his "spot" and spend the day fishing with him.  We would always catch something but it was more the time sitting and watching as things happened around you, birds, insects, even the occasional field mouse that would run right up to you and quickly backtrack when he finally noticed you there.

Grandfather passed away awhile ago, I can still remember hanging the wreath there on the fence of his "Secret Fishing Hole".  Would be nice to see if it was still there or not, don't think it will be but stranger things have happened.

Anyway, major question I have, is there anyplace on the Kensico Reservoir that you're not allowed to fish from shore?  Place my grandfather used to take me has some old buildings that look like they aren't used by the water department anymore but I wouldn't want to get in trouble for something like that.

Love the website by the way, really gave me some information to take in while I was at work.  Called my boss and told him I was taking April First off allready so good luck to everyone.

Jay,
Welcome to the forums. I'm a Mt. Pleasant guy also, live in the "flats" in Pleasantville.

I'm not sure about exact spots but I would expect signs to say if any area was completely off limits to shore fishing. Kensico is a little touchy. I wouldn't try the "on" the bridge or dam road. Some of the buildings around Nannahagen Rd may be off limits. Check for signs.

I used to like shorefishing just south of the Rye Bridge on the west side of Route 22. There's a hump to walk over but you end up on a rocky shore looking out at the dam.

Gotta run, Best Always,
Vinny

Hehe, had some friends in the Flats when I was in high school (I'm up in the hills beyond Corsi Tire lol)

And yes place my Grandfather took me all the time was literally off of Nanyhagen road.  Tomorrow after work perhaps I'll put the hang tag in the car and do a little hiking around just to be on the safe side.  Managed to find my rod and reel plus some old tackle.  Probably won't use any of that though, pick up some NightCrawlers from Wades and that'll be that.  Remember not having much luck with lures lol.

I've heard of the brewery and live only a couple of blocks in from there. If I start drinking again it will be the first place I go. I'm not against proper drinking, I just never liked hangovers and headaches.

Best to All,
Vinny
