green braided
« on: August 14, 2011, 12:51:16 pm »
i switched to green braided this year after using a friends as their is no memory and is almost impossible to see in water.  it seems to work great for saltwater. but my freshwater productivity has gone done from  when i use clear mono ...im just wondering whether anyone has had tough time bass fishing new croton this year or if its the line...any one use green braided and any comments?

    Hey Yanks

I use the green braid, exclusively on my baitcaster reels for both bass and trout , but I use a 6ft leader of floro of either 8 or more recently 15 lb tied with an allbright knot and have done well with the bass in the early season for bass as well as trout . some members here use a small barrel swivel as well to tie the both types of line that would make replacing a leader fast and effective , I tried both with success but prefer the knot as I have become proficient at tieing the knot in and out of the boat . The floro leader in combo with the braid is awesome in being stealthy for all types of fishing give it a try and let me know the difference you will be amazed .

I will second that reservoirdog!  I will also do an albright on the braid, and if the fishing is fast and furious and my flouro leaders getting short or beat up a fast surgeons knot will do the trick tying flouro on flouro rather then retying a whole leader.  I try to stay away from the swivels especially in the dark as sometimes you dont see them come up and they will wreak havoc on your guides.  But that leader should do the trick to your presentation!

Yea RR

The guides do get beatup as well as getting stuck in the levelwind .

I have probably caught more bass using straight green braid than flouro or copoly line with t-rigged plastics in the last couple of years. I admit that I'm lazy and maybe I'd catch more with a flouro leader so don't take it as a scientific answer. The braid definitely doesn't scare them all away.

Best to All,
Vinny.

My wiseguy answer is usually this... if fish can distinguish the fine green line why don't they see the bullet weight on a t-rig, big hook on a jighead, or oddly colored plastic trailers. Seems to me it's more of a reaction that thorough analysis by the fish. :)

I will concede that some finesse tactics warrant clear line.

I've been wrong before,
Vinny

A wiseguy answer back would be - they do "see the bullet weight on a t-rig, big hook on a jighead, or oddly colored plastic trailers" and thats when you use "finesse tactics" which  "warrant clear line"  You could catch a bass on a moving twig on wire in slop but try that in a crystal clear fast moving creek and the only thing you'll be catching is twigs.  If you feel comfortable not using different leaders or any leaders to varying changing conditions stick to it, nothing wrong with that just enjoy yourself out there  :)

Versatility is the key. We need more tackle and gear. LOL

Thats Funny!!!!

I had just the opposite happen to me , thats what made me switch to a Floro leader and even a bigger plus if I see a big brown turning over I have the confidence to through my Lure at it . Its like having a dual purpose baitcaster and why not it does not take that much more time to tie on. I use this setup at Titicus and Amawalk where the bass are abundant and at times the browns are lurking close by!!!!!! . I believe that being stealhy is key!!!!!!!!

I agree with reservoirdog.  Also I'm not a fan of braided line.  I dunno why, i tried it out a few times but ended up switching back over to monofilament with fluorocarbon leaders.  Bass are not line shy so they will hit a lure regardless of line.  But if a person would like to fish for trout, a fluorocarbon leader is key.
