Opening day
« on: March 20, 2008, 10:09:35 pm »
I'm ready to start fishing

Planning on being 'sick' on Tuesday.  Anyone else going out on Kensico?  This will be my first time out in a boat on the lake so I'm not sure what to expect.  Do most guys head right for the Bridge area and out towards middle for deeper water?  I'm assuming most people just fish the drop offs.  Is that true?

Newcaddy, during the boating season you can move your boat,to an area closer to the bridge,ie areas 7 or 8.Come december though you must move it back to its allocated spot. This will save you a lot of rowing to trout areas. I plan on banging out tuesday also.

Vinny,
Counting the days to opening season. :) Looking forward to our 4/5 outing on Rye Lake.

Jimmy,
I would check with the DEP before moving a boat.  The has been some talk of now allowing the movement of boats on overcrowded reservoirs, like Kensico.

I guess to make sure. The rule book states clearly this is allowable.Kensico isn't over crowded, not when compared to cross river etc,.

I bet there are more boats on cross river than Kensico, and kensico is twice the size.I dont know who survey's this, but there seems to be different rules for different....... .I went for a walk in by webber's cove a couple of week's ago and there are boat's there, with permit sticker's.I thought no one was allowed fish here! Area 7 has only a few boats ,why won't they open this up?

Jimmy,
I spoke to Mike at the DEP office in Mahopac yesterday and he told me that this was a Kensico boat move restriction policy that the DEP was thinking of enacting, not sure when.  I would just check with the DEP, before you move a boat, to see if the move restriction was in effect.

They need to notify all permit holders then ,cause this is the first I've heard of it.They keep making the reservior smaller and smaller, for us.What's next? They have closed off all the best fishing area's ,the dam I can understand, but the other's ,no.We're permit holder's they know who we are.Why can't we fish webber's cove. This is the most beautiful part of Kensico and we're bared.I've had a permit going back to 91.

Jared,

I hunt over in Weber's cove (its legal), it's a beautiful area, too bad it is closed to boats. Its on the other end of louden peninsula in rye lake.

Good luck next week!

Jared,

the bridge is always a productive spot because there is a lot of structure there and fish are drawn there. They hide in the structure or hang around the columns of the bridges. The water temperature is so cold this time of year that the lake trout can be found up in 10-20 feet of water. I have caught them casting krocodiles around the shoreline in shallow water.

You can try fishing the drop offs, although the fish can be suspended too. April and the first part of May is a great time for trout on Kensico because they've gone all winter feeding very lightly, and as the water progressively heats up into the 40s and 50s, the bait starts to come out in abundance, and the fish go into a feeding frenzy. You can catch your daily limit some days very quickly! (Daily limit per person is 3 lake trout at 18 inches). The trout fishing here can be unbelievable.

Well I got out this morning for a couple of hours, cause I know I won't be able to get out the rest
of the week. The wind was from the NW and bitterly cold. With ice on my top 3 guides, I managed
to hook into this 4lb 3oz Laker. Once again supporting my theory that Lakers hit on windy days and
that I can't catch a Brown out of Kensico to save my life. And this even though I've seen them.
Hope everyone has good luck this week.
Ken H
