C Falls today
« on: August 05, 2011, 01:12:21 pm »
Tried C Falls today, and I am now 100% convinced that I have a curse regarding this lake, this year.    Just unbelievably bad for me in 2011, even though guys have apparently been getting trout there lately.

Was out really early.....absolutely perfect conditions   -    a fog that lasted until 9:00 am, cool, not very breezy, some surface activity here and there.    Had baits up top, and at about 20 or so.     Despite this, I didn't get a damn bite, not even a nibble, from 6 - 9.    Nada.     I saw another guy out there ......maybe a guy from this site.......and he said he didn't have anything.

On the row back, I accidentally hit a rod with the oar, and it popped out and sank to the bottom.

Then I finally got the first hit of the day    -    it was super shallow, so I was convinced it was a bass (I'm not a trout snob, but I was hoping for trout).   Smoking line out.  I didn't give him very long to run, and I hit him a bit early.    The bait comes back completely shredded....I mean, an eyeball, a backbone and the tail.   No doubt a trout had it, unless it was a pickerel.    No bass did that in 15 seconds.    That was the extent of the action.

But I wasn't hit by lightning, or bitten by a watersnake, or gored by a deer, so I'll take it as a good day out.    I think I will wait until late September/October before I hit C Falls again.     At this point, I doubt I could catch a CF trout if I dropped grenades in the water.

Its not just you man.  I put on a boat on CFalls last September and had more action in Sept. & Oct. last year than I have at CFalls all this year. Although, I havent fished it in over a month. Sucks...

It's insane, really.

I don't say this as a boast    -    because I am sure many fishermen do WAY better than I do on CF     -      but usually by this time each year (about 5 trips or so on CF), I will have caught 15 or so good trout (over 22 or so).    And I don't know if there is a year I haven't gotten one over 8.      And I think MOST guys who fish this lake seriously do this well......believe me, not just me.    I think the fact that it is a trophy lake, and not really overfished keeps the numbers and sizes up.

Even the bass fishing seems down a bit there.   I don't really "target" them, but they seemed a hell of a lot more cooperative last year.

But some guys seem to be catching trout lately...maybe a lot of night fishing guys, who knows?

It just has sucked, for me, this year.   Big time.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's just an "off" cycle this year. Next year could be different.
When I go through one of those not-one-damn-hit days twice in a row, either I won't fish that
reservoir for at least a month and concentrate elsewhere for a while,
or I'll change my tactic completely.

Maybe last years constant major water fluctuations have something to do with it?

I fish there often but it wasn't me out there this morning.  I think it has been streaky this year, but the good days can be really good.  Even on good days it feels like the windows are short.

Sounds like it was a trout on this morning and if it was a good run it could have been a big brown.  If you landed it and it was 6 or more it probably would have changed your opinion some.

Sorry about the rod and reel.

The killer is that I know some guys are really banging them, at least lately.   I know John at BB&T has done well recently, as well as some of the guys who weigh-in there.

I'll give it a rest till late September.       I'll give Kensico more of a try.

I was close to loosing my pole last week fishing with my wife last weekend at CR.  It was actually kind've funny... We were out fishing deep and I had two lines in the water.  My wife facing to the back of the boat fishing.  I was getting ready to pack it in and was packing up the fish finder when I heard a splash. I turn around and sure enough my pole was about a foot under water.  I grab it up and sure enough there was a fish on.  I started reeling it in and it splashed up to the surface in front of my wife and then... gone.  I asked her what it was but since she hasn't caught too many fish she didn't know, not even size.  I was only seconds away from loosing my pole but glad I saved it.  So I had some excitement almost loosing my pole and a loosing fish at the same time.  It was a good day!   :o ;D

Hey bluefish,

I was on CFR this morning also. I think I might have talked to you on the lake. The conditions were really awesome,  the water was like ice out there it was so calm. I landed a 2.25 pound SMB. I trolled for trout for 4 hours and gave up. I started to fish for bass so I wouldn't get shunked. It's tough waking up early and not catching the big brown I was hoping for. I will fish it again in October but im done with CFR for the time being. Next week I plan on spending my time fly fishing.

Sorry about the rod and reel, that sucks!

Yeah, that must've been me.....I think we were the only two guys on the lake.

Today was one of those days    -      the conditions look absolutely perfect, but not a damn fish.    Maybe I'll try again when it is 100 degrees, midday, with 20 mph winds.

yeah CFR has been pretty slow for me this season.  Ive been out on it at least 12 times since May and have very little to show from it.  Times like this make me want to buy another boat.

This morning, at the bait shop, I struck up a conversation with a guy who was going fishing in Boyd's Corners.     This was the first guy I have ever met who has a boat there.    I think he said he moved it from the West Branch.

I asked him how the fishing was, and he said he got walleye all year long, as well as white perch, yellows, etc.    But I also got the impression that it was an "open" reservoir......that is, no waiting list for new boats.    Not trying to sway you one way or another, but I was impressed that this guy was getting walleye into the summer months, if you are looking for a different type of fish to go for (that you can't catch in C Falls     -    apart from the very rare one that makes it through Diverting's waterway).

Boyd's corner and west branch are both pretty close to home.  If boyds had trout in it I would def put another boat there.  Boyd's is a great looking lake. I've never seen a boat on it while driving past it.
