Thanks for all the feedback everyone. I guess it couldn't hurt to try using lighter weights because i am usually stationary when fishing with bait as opposed to trolling. I usually set the drag really loose but when i went out on saturday i got a really good hit that pulled out a bunch of line very quickly that ended up getting caught around my reel. I tried bringing the fish in ice fishing style because i couldn't reel and I ended up losing it  :( That's when i switched to opening the bail which once again didn't work. Next time i think i'll go back to light drag (but not too light) and a light split shot as opposed to the heavy egg sinkers I was using.

When i went fishing last on the kensico, i got at least 5 good hits on live bait but when i let the fish run with the bait by opening the bail, it seemed to always drop the bait. I was wondering if this could be because when the tension is off the line, the weight falls to the bottom, pulling the bait out of the trout's mouth. If it doesn't directly pull the bait out of the fish's mouth, it may make the fish want to drop the bait because there is something else pulling on the bait. This is just a hypothesis and i was wondering if this could be possibly why the trout kept hitting and dropping the bait. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

with the amount of tension on the line by you keeping your bail closed will cause the fishto drop the bait! You need a bait runner reel or strike guards and you should have better success
A bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work!!

John's right. You want an open bail with a strike guard (or a rubber band if you're cheap like me), so there is zero resistance when a trout hits and runs. Idon't recommend split shots at all over egg sinkers and you can find some pretty small. But as long as your barrel swivel isn't too small that it gets jammed in the sinker hole, that line will flow through with less resistance than even the smallest split shot, especially when a fish is really moving. that little lump of a split shot becomes a real drag as the speed increases.
