Surface lures for brown trout...
« on: February 24, 2008, 05:27:30 pm »
I know we have a bunch of knowledgeable trout guys here so... what surface lures might you suggest when the browns are up high in the water column?

From Tom and others I get the idea that Rapala minnow types are good. I'm also wondering about 1 oz. bucktail jigs that can be reeled along the top of weeds.

Thanks,
Vinny

Hey Vinny, 1 oz. I would think would be to heavy. I keep reading on this site about trout and weeds, do you guys catch alot of trout in/around the weeds? I just haven't associated trout with weeds in my fishing, Da-phish.

I'm thinking that Cross River has a row of weeds about 20 feet out from shore all around the north side shore by the dam. Dominic and I have caught bass there and an accidental carp on a jig once. It's not too deep, maybe 18 feet on the outside weed edge going out to 30 feet.
If the browns are coming up at the end of April/ early May, that might be a decent spot for them to be near or around. The video guy was in that area and it seems to be popular at that end of the reservoir.

Thanks again,
Vinny

Floating Rapalas work good, krocodiles work well - letting them go down a few feet and then straight retrieving them. Any variation of the Rapalas are good too - Rebels, Yozuri, Challengers, pretty much anything that resembles a wounded sawbellie - silver, silver/blue is good - but silver is key.
